Nga Mere Pounamu hui at Ngati Kauwhata

On Sunday 21st April,2002 our whanau travelled to Ngati Kauwhata to hui with our cousins about the Nga Mere Pounamu that have recently been purchased by Te Papa Museum in Wellington

This was a special day for all those in attendance. Uncle Ihaka Miratana (Ike) gave the whakapapa of the pounamu. It was decided that we would establish a small working group to consult with other interested parties from Ngati Tukorehe, Ngati Kapumanawawhiti, Ngati Raukawa, Te Papa and Kingitanga Representatives. Our goal is to hikoi to Te Papa on June 1st, 2002 or thereabouts.

Outside the Whare Tupuna

Our Wehiwehi whanau outside the whare tupuna. Aunty Pearl Lawton had brought some of the photos from the whare tupuna to the meeting house which show photos of the kings involved in the Nga Mere Pounamu being given to the Prince of Wales in 1920

Ngati Wehiwehi whanau were certainly made to feel welcome. After a powhiri we have some light refreshments and then after the hui we have some lunch. This photo was taken after lunch and before we were about to leave. I counted about twenty whanau who made the journey.
