Mediocre Standards
One leader in the community noted that "Brandon is a community which is satisfied with mediocrity and arrives at that level very quickly". Another way it has been expressed is that quality is tolerated but the citizens will neither let you insist on it from others, or pay you a premium for it. It seems that "inclusion of everybody (or at least those in the 'family'), and horizontal nullification of competency-based status" is of great importance in the town.On the other hand, Brandon does give everybody an opportunity to participate, particularly in the volunteer sector, and is very open to new participants. However, though such an opportunity can be used by people to hone skills to a level of perfection, it is preferred if such excellence is not flaunted. The excellence card can be developed in this city but it can not be played with any expectation of reward here : it is best to develop it here and play it elsewhere.
It is a well-known principle of business that a business can offer three things: quality, service or price, and the customer can have any two of the three, but not all three. In this town, the corporate selection is service and low price, but there is no premium for excellence. Put anybody in the job, pay him or her low amounts, and let's get on with life. "How can one measure quality anyway?" one person queried recently.
