[ Intro to Runoff of Groundwater as a concern from original discussion papersource#1, "Common Concerns" section p. 3 ]Runoff contaminated by manure may originate from livestock pens, areas where free-ranging livestock congregate, farmyards, field storage sites where dry manure is temporarily piled prior to spreading, or fields where manure has been spread. Runoff may occur after heavy rains or following spring melting of snow and ice, and unless carefully managed, can carry a variety of contaminants to surface waters.
The Livestock Manure and Mortalities Management Regulation prohibits the escape of manure or manure contaminated runoff from agricultural operations. Contamination of surface water by runoff or discharge of manure is also prohibited. (For further detail, see "Manitoba Regulations and Guidelines.")
Livestock producers can help protect surface waters from runoff by maintaining well-vegetated and protected riparian zones. These strips of land located immediately adjacent to bodies of surface water help to improve water quality by filtering runoff and stabilizing banks.
