When the latest version of the Toyota Supra was launched in 1993, it made the transition from stylish coupe to serious supercar. Taking inspiration from the late 80s 4500GT concept car, from its giant front air dam through to its towering rear spoiler the new Supra was an aggressive piece of kit.
Whilst the exceptional looks may have turned heads, it was under the bonnet that the real revelation lay. Lurking beneath was a 3lt 24-valve straight six engine bolstered by twin sequential turbochargers. It was enough to develop 320bhp. Combined with the fact that the new car was over 136kg lighter than the old one, it meant that in twin turbo guise, the Supra had a power to weight ratio better than a Ferrari 348. In Japan a normally aspirated version of the same engine was available, though with only 224bhp it was deemed not powerful enough for the speed hungry Europeans.
Every one of the 320 horses found its way to the tarmac via the rear wheels, while wishbones front and rear ensured that the Supra was a fine handler. A speed limiter restricted it to 155mph top speed. A six speed manual gearbox ensured that the driving experience was heightened still further, however, automatic transmission is also available.
Both the engine and driving position are located as far to the rear of the car as possible in order to give an ideal weight balance and the most neutral cornering stance possible.
