There is, perhaps, no better road car than the Nissan Skyline GTR R34. Some might be prettier, some might be more powerful, but the R34's combination of power, technology and sheer driveability stirs itself into an awesome cocktail. The two door coupe now has a smaller, sleeker bodyshell, whose torsional rigidity and aerodynamics are improved over the R33, finished off at the back with an adjustable rear wing. Under the aluminium bonnet beats the twin-turbocharged heart. Claimed power of the 2.6lt straight-six engine is still 280bhp, a maximum agreed by Japanese manufacturers. The R34 can reach a speed of 156mph before its speed limiter goes to work.
Four-piston Brembo brake calipers bite the four ventilated discs to bring the Skyline to a halt. Other assets include four-wheel-steer system, active limited slip differential and yaw control. Adding to the R34's phenomenal grip from the multi-link suspension are the wide-thread, low-profile tyres. Transmission is via six-speed Getrag box, which keeps the engine spinning in the juiciest part of the power band.
The Skyline is a favourite amongst tuning companies. Nissan's own motorsport department Nismo produces a range of speed-enhancing components from uprated to suspension to aerodynamic bodywork and a whole variety of engine parts.
