The Honda CRX has a clever electrically folding hardtop roof, transforming the car from coupe to open-topped roadster at the press of a button. Ingeniously, the one-piece roof is lifted out on electro-hydraulic rams and stored beneath the bootlid which raises up automatically in a marvellous piece of street theatre.
The CRX attracts plenty of attention anyway thans to its 2-seater sportster styling. Although in layout in resembles a junior mid-engined racer like a shrunken NSX, the CRX is in fact a front-driver.
But thanks to all-round racing-style double wishbone suspension with coil springs and stabiliser bars, handling is a fine match for its sporting styling. The standard fit power assisted rack and pinion steering is fast-acting and grip from the 195/60 section tyres on relatively small 14-inch wheels is remarkably good. Promising sprightly performance is the enry level CRX S, powered by a 1.5 lt. four-cylinder 16-valve engine liberating a modest 102bhp at 5,900rpm. The quicker Si gets its go 1.6lt 16-valve, equipped with Honda's VTEC variable-valve timing for 125bhp at 6,00rpm. In the SiR, power is increased to 160bhp at 7,600rpm to give a top speed of 130mph.
Like all Honda VTEC engines the CRX's needs to be worked hard to extract the best from it and that means slotting through the five-speed manual gearbox. A four-speed automatic is also available. Braking power is by all-round discs, ventilated at the front and equipped with an ABS anti-lock system.
