The role of evil in society has many varying effects, some of which are positive and negative. Evil can be defined as a force which unknowingly ruins happiness and ruins sound moral decisions. The role of evil is a topic of much debate throughout many religious sects. In the story "Lord of the Flies" evil played many roles, many of these roles are also quite prevalent in society.

My first example of how evil affected the boys in "Lord of the Flies" was by bringing them all together. This activity of fending against the savages by Ralph, and the remaining boys brought them a sense of belonging, a positive effect brought on by evil. Fending against one cause, brought the boys together, much like in society how religious groups cluster together, for specific causes. These clusters in our society help people identify themselves, and bring themselves a sense of belonging in a very positive form. These clusters can also have a very negative affect on society, that can create biased mobs that hurt others in what they feel is a justified war.

My second example, would be how evil caused selfish actions on Jack's behalf. Jack's selfishness caused him to belittle Ralph, and bully Piggy, to gain power. His violent actions also dictated his rise to the chief position of the tribe. Similar actions in our society root from selfishness, such as the belittlement of other candidates by politicians. They are selfish and instead of admitting slight faults, these people do their best to make their opponent look faulty. In society this belittlement can cause mass riots, and people to rebel against a common cause based of scapegoating. These acts of belittlement can harm many people, and jealousy is a common cause of this, which is very heavily inspired by evil. Jealousy is a complete opposite of what we morally stand for. Sometimes this belittlement can result in positive forms, for example a candidate in a political race might belittle his opponent, and reveal many truthful faults in his oppositions platform.

Finally, as my last example of evil's role in "Lord of the Flies" was the ending of innocence. In the story evil disfigured the boys into becoming savages, which caused the boys to change into something they weren't to hide behind their mirage to get away from innocence. In society this is common in those who are bullied to change how they identify themselves in thought and dress, by changing to someone else's ideal of a model human being. In the story Piggy suffered from this dillema, because he didn't change he was pushed around, ignored, neglected, and eventually murdered by the savages. Another example of this in the story was Sam and Eric joining Jack's tribe after being bullied into joining.

I conclusion, evil plays many roles in the story which are common in society, some of which are positive and negative. Evil is the cause for segregation of minorities from majorities, selfishness and greed, and the end of innocence. I feel "Lord of the Flies" was a very good example of some of the roles evil plays in society, on a much smaller scale.
