One has to keep oneself respectful, formal and powerful otherwise the others won't value him but on the contrary they would smash him down. The elf-esteem is what the proverb praises here. One has never to expose his weak points to the others for fear they should use them as a weapon to obliterate him or at least dirty his reputation.
