Chapter 18

After the pie Hannah and BJ, Nick’s oldest sister, went out shopping. Hannah wanted to dress to impress the next day, and that meant also wanting something brand new. This left Nick behind to talk to his mother as he helped her plant flowers in the garden.

“So what do you think of Hannah mom?” Nick asked as he sat down another flat of flowers.

Jane looked up from her planting, “She’s a doll Nick, I love her.”

“Good, cause I do too,” Nick replied bluntly. Jane eyed him, “Seriously. It’s strange because I thought love came from dating or whatever, but it hasn’t happened like that. So far Hannah and I have just hung around together, we haven’t really kissed even. But I really think I’ve fallen in love with her. Is that wrong?”

“Oh I don’t think so Nick,” Jane answered returning to her planting. “Most people fall in love with each other through dating, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only way. And from what you’ve told me, you and Hannah have done more than just hang out together. You’ve helped her through a really serious time, and that probably strengthens your bond. I think you’ve fallen in love with her as naturally as anyone falls in love.”

Nick sighed and looked up at the sky, “But does she feel the same way?”

Jane dropped her shovel and turned to Nick, “Are you kidding me? Of course she does.”

Nick starred at his mom, “Huh? Did she say something to you?”

“No, she didn’t have to! Don’t you see the way she looks at you? Gosh Nick it’s written all over her face.”

Nick smiled and began to blush, “Now all we have to do is tell each other.”

“Oh you will. It will happen when the time’s right. Maybe even sooner than you think.” Nick and his mom finished their gardening just as BJ and Hannah returned from the mall, with plenty of bags. Nick teased them over how much they’d each bought.

"Shut up Nick, we’re girls, it’s what we do.” BJ yelled at him.

Nick offered to reimburse Hannah for what she’d bought. “I didn’t think to give you money before you left.”

“No way am I taking your money for this Nick...put it away,” Hannah refused.

“Please Hannah, consider it a gift. It would make me happy," he begged and put out his lip like a baby.

“Oh alright, but just this once Carter, big baby!” Hannah surrendered. Putting the money in her purse. He hugged her and the two joined the others in the dining room for the nice dinner Jane had prepared.
