The Brow Family

Hello I'm Chad Brow from Rhode Island. I'm creating this page to research the Brow Family name. Hopefully it will help with building and piecing together our families past, and maybe it will be useful for you! Originally I thought ny name was Scottish, but I found out that in 1755, England exciled my ancestors from Acadia (Nova Scotia). Upon arriving in Boston our name was Americanized from Breaux to Brow. Here is some information I found about the Scottish name Brow... The Scottish family name Brow is classified as being of habitation name origin. The phrase "habitation name" is used to describe those family names which find their origins in the location of the residence if the initial bearer. In some instances such names are derived from the name of the town or region where the original bearer was born or resided. Others refer to the geograhic location of the original bearer's home while still others refer to a sign displayed over the door of his residence. With regard to the family name Brow, this name comes directly from "brow", meaning "edge of a steep place". Brow may also come from the place name Burg of Burgh, the name of several places in England and Scotland, including Burgh Castle in Norfolk, Burgh in Suffolk, and Burg in Strathclyde, Scotland. Thus the original bearer of the name was known by the members of his community as the "one from Burg of Burgh". These place names derive frm the Old English "burgh" meaning "fortified place". Variants of the surname Brow include Browe. One of the earliest references to this name or to a variant is a record of one John Brow is recorded as bailie of Aberdeen in 1362. Edward Brow was recorded there in 1546. Research is of course ongoing and this name may have been documented even earlier than the dates indicated above.
