Thank you for your interest
in the Boarding House Mentors. Our organization is built on the support
and action of others. Our mission is simple, we introduce at risk
and disadvantaged youth to the exhilaration of surfing in order to
broaden their life experiences with a positive healthy non competitive
activity that may have a significant impact on their self esteem,
self image and self confidence. Our program is simple; we have outgoing
volunteers that bring their love and passion for surfing that dedicate
their day to teach surfing. We provide the boards, rash guards, and
wetsuits. Not only do they have a day of fun, but also they meet new
friends, encourage each other and reach goals.
What is Boarding House Mentors?
Boarding House Mentors is a program, which brings "at risk"
youth and mentors to the beach to learn to surf together. By sharing
this experience mentors and mentees become closer, and youth become
inspired by the possibilities within themselves.
This program is the result of collaboration between enthusiasts from
the surfing community and the experts from Youth Mentoring Connection;
in the summer of 2003 we conducted four tremendously successful pilot
sessions. Mentors and their young chargers came back each week with
renewed enthusiasm and out numbers grew until we had to stop accepting
new sign-ups. Our goal for 2004 is to have the capacity to serve every
mentor-mentee pair that wants to be inspired by this experience.
The boarding house mentors believe that the youths will take what
they have learned and apply it to the next challenge that comes their
way. They will be able to look daunting task in the face, learn the
skills to help them along the way and finally reach their goals.
Why Boarding House Mentors
Youth today need us more then ever. They are increasingly becoming
disconnected from their culture because of conditions in their neighborhoods
and dwindling resources. As this happens it becomes more and more
difficult to engage them in positive pursuits. Too often they turn
to the influence of drugs, alcohol, violence or gangs. By offering
the fun and exciting experience of surfing, we reconnect with "at
risk" youth under the influence of nature. Most of our youths
come from the inner city and although they grow up within a few miles
of the ocean, many of them have never experience the power and beauty
of waves rolling into the shoreline, or a sunset over an ocean horizon.
We create a peaceful community where mentors and mentees can experience
the exhilaration of being "high on life". One only needs
to look into the eyes of a young person at the end of a surfing event
to see the openness there. They become receptive to the influences
of caring mentors and the simple lessons we teach at the sessions
about respecting nature, respecting each other, building community,
turning on to life, and waking up their inner spirit.
Why boarding house mentors, because youth is our most precious resource.
Thank you, for your interest in the Boarding House Mentors we hope
to expand our program but to do that we need volunteers and funding.
