Eden

Prologue

"Please... come get us..."
Warm wind whispered past the building. Beautiful tropical birds fluttered in towering trees, and ocean waves gently washed the shore.
"Request immeadiate assistance and pickup.." The woman leaned on the desk, tapping the code machine, breaths wheezing.
"Alena."
She turned, trembling. "We have to get out of here, Scott... we have to..."
He looked down at the code line, but when she reached out to continue the code, he pulled her away. "No. It's too late."
She struggled weakly, then started crying. She was small, and her once tabby fur was slowly changing to a rainbow of colors. "Scott... we have to.."
"It's too alte." He pulled her to his chest, the primers that hung off his arms brushing and rustling against the thin membrane of the wings on her back. She had been in agony during the days the wings had grown in, laying on a bed in sickbay and sobbing in pain. Him, well... the primers were still coming in, making his arms throb dully, and talons hung from his fingers.
She sobbed, pale multicolored hair covering her face. "They know now. They'll get the signal."
"Yes I know."
They sat on a battered sofa, leaning into each other for the comfort, silent for a while.
"What will they think..?"
"I do not know." He drew his legs up under himself, itching at his growing feathers.
More silence.
He stood and went over to the desk, opening a drawer and pulling out a magnum revolver. He checked the rounds, and tossed it on the coffee table.
She stiffled her tears, looking at it, then looking at him. "What are you suggesting, Scott?"
"You know what I'm suggesting." He replied heavily. "I think I'm going to start going through more serious changes soon, Alena. Agony."
"I know. But Eden.."
"To HELL with Eden!" He hissed.
There was more silence, then he picked up the magnum and turned it on himself. She didn't argue, just silently watched as he lifted the gun and tucked it under his chin, finger dropping to the trigger.
|Don't do that.|
"Shut up Eden!" Scott shrieked. "I'm going to do it, I swear I will!"
|Don't do it.|
He tried to squeeze the trigger, but his finger stopped. As much as he wated to do it, as much as he wated to die, he couldn't pull the trigger.
He let the gun fall, bowing his head. "Damn you... Eden..." He whispered.
Silence descended again in the room. The wind whispered by, nature continued on, even as tears fell.
