Anthony Quinn Achievement Award

Anthony Quinn
"Someone once said if I was left on an island, I’d reconstruct the rocks. I have a need to say I was here."

And so, Anthony Quinn left his mark on the world. His creative spirit continues to move us and enrich our lives.

In 2000 the Providence Festival of New Latin American Cinema started a tradition of annually honoring an artist who has made substantial contributions to not only our cultural life but also to our quality of life: the first recipient was the actor and humanitarian Danny Glover. At the Gala on April 20, 2001 the actor Manny Perez presented Anthony Quinn with a lifetime achievement award before a capacity audience. Later that evening, Mr. Quinn's close personal friend, Providence mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr. gave a toast to Mr. Quinn that didn't leave a dry eye in the house.

In the last months of his life Mr. Quinn generously donated his name for this award which will recognize notable achievements in the arts. The Festival will be very proud to present the first Anthony Quinn Achievement Award for Excellence in Film and the Arts at the Tenth Festival. The award itself is a valuable piece of fine art donated by Mrs. Katherine Quinn: one of Mr. Quinn’s sculptures.

The Providence Festival of New Latin American Cinema is proud to announce that Antonio Banderas will be the first recipient of this prestigious award. Mr. Banderas will receive the Award at the April 19, 2002 Gala party that will mark the beginning of the Festival. Join us for this momentous occasion. (See Gala link.)
