INFINITY SAILING TOWARD A CURE IN LEUKEMIA CUP 1999

HOW WE DID
- TOP FUND RAISER
DEBI took Top Fund-Raiser with raising a little over $8500.
As top fundraiser, we also won a bare boat Caribbean
Cruise. Unfortunately Debi doesn't fly and we really couldn't afford the out-of-pocket expenses any way, so we never used it. What a waste!
By raising over $7500, she also qualified to go to the 1999 Sail Fantasy in Annapolis Md.
Scott Murry, a close second, also qualified but let our son Chris go in his place. Very generous of you Scott, but we still consider you our archenemy!
Chris and Deb got to race on one of two schooners for a day with
Gary Jobson while I toured Annapolis
- TOP FUND RAISING BOAT
INFINITY WON THE CUP as top fund raising boat by raising a little over $8500.
The Cup is a hand blown glass perpetual trophy that's kept in the winner's yacht club for a year. Our club is actually the "Coasters Harbor Navy Yacht Club" but they don't have a trophy case so it was kept with the "Newport Yacht Club". We occasionally race with them and have a lot of good friends and sponsors there. We also got a smaller version of The Cup that we get to keep.
Here's a picture of us with "The Cup" on Infinity:
- THE RACE
We ended up doing "Windward-Leewards" in the same racing circle as the one designs. We expected to cruise around Jamestown Island, but they only sent the spinnaker cruising class on that race. The wind was really picking up that day and as usual we were undermanned. It was just Debi Chris and me and Chris ended up going below and sleeping after the first leg. He was still pretty run down from his last round of Chemo. In one of the races we almost took out a J-35 that didn't see us coming up on the opposite tack. I tried to get Debi to bear off, but we had the right-of-way, and Debi wasn't about to give way. A friend of ours turned out to be on the J and said that it was real turmoil when they finally heard me yell "STARBOARD" and had to duck us at the last second. We ended up doing two races before they sent us in because of to much wind. Debi was relieved but I was just starting to get into it.
Here's a picture of us going windward on INFINITY during the race.
