INFINITY walked away with the Leukemia Cup for the second year in a row by raising over $12,500, $4000 over last years total.
INFINITY was followed by Scott Murry's "Unplugged" - which raised closed to $10,000. Unplugged was a close second in 1999. Then came Vale Krsulic's " AIRWOLF" for 3rd. Mark Bregman's "Total Eclipse" brought in $7500, although it was past the fundraising competition deadline.
Actually when they announced it, Debi and I were somewhat in shock. The day before on Friday, we finally got a chance to talk to Scott for the first time and thanked him for letting our son Chris go to the Fantasy Sail weekend in his place last year. It was kind of funny watching Deb and Scott talking, both of them dying to know what the other had raised, but skirting the issue
hoping the other one would reveal their total. However, after talking with him we were pretty sure that he had first place wrapped up. Also there were rumors about how great some of the other boats had done this year. We were a little upset by this at first then came to our senses and realized that if several boats did beat our total then that meant that several other boats had raised over $12,00 and that would have been great! I have to admit though, that when they called out Scott's name as 2d place and we realized that we had won the Cup again, I was ecstatic and couldn't hold back the tears, especially when Debi held up the Cup and said that "This is for you Bob". Bob Placco was a great
friend that we first met in the Rhode Island Hospital Blood Clinic. He was an inspiration
to Chris and actually almost made us look forward to the numerous trips
to the clinic in anticipation of seeing Bob. He was strong to
the end and always took the time to inspire other patients to be
strong and keep hope. We sailed INFINITY in his name this year as well as Chris's and Dave Kearney's. Dave was the honorary crewmember for the regatta this year. Dave joined our planning committee this year and was very active right up until he had to go for his Bone Marrow Transplant. Dave, like Bob, has a very strong attitude and was still hoping to at least show up for the regatta. He is said to be doing well on his recoverey at home now and at Friday's diner his wife gave a very steering update on what Dave and other victims of this disease have to go through to beat it. There wasn't a dry eye under the tent.
We all send you our prayers Dave and know you will soon be back with us helping to plan next year's regatta.
