Chapter 1: Leaving Home

A young girl sat crying on her bed. She was of the age of five and had shiny black hair, light blue eyes, fair skin, and beautiful red lips. From her face you would have thought her a nobles daughter, but her clothes and surroundings betrayed that. The room she was in was very small with only enough room for three very small beds each with a thin homemade quilt and a straw pillow. Each bed also had a small trunk at the end. The young girl's clothes were no more than rags and her feet were bare of shoes. Sunlight shone through the one window in the room making it look slightly cheerful.

A couple minutes later a middle aged woman entered the room. She was thin and had dull brown hair. Her face was gentle and kind and showed signs that she had, had a rough life with plenty of hard times. "Trena, dear what's wrong?" she asked her face and voice filled with concern. She walked over to her daughter's bed, sat down and held her hand.

"I don't want to leave you, Ma. You, Pa, Tresa, Kalin and Matthew are my family. I don't want to learn shang, please don't make me go." said Trena the tears spilling down her cheek.

" I am sorry, Trena. Your father and I just want the best for you and we know we can't-."She stopped and looked around the room tears falling from her eyes. "We just can't give you the life you deserve." She leaned over and gave her daughter a comforting hug. "What ever happens never ever forget me your pa and your brother and sisters love you very much. We want all of you to make us proud but before you do that make sure you yourself is proud of what you have become. Matthew is 10, five years older than you and he wants to become a knight of Tortall, and then your two sisters,Tresa 8 years old and Kalin 7 years old both want to go to the city of gods to become ladies. And then there is you my sweet Trena. Ever since you have been able to walk you have wanted to be a shang warrior. Your favorite stories are those of the Shang Dragon Liam Ironarm. Your father and I have been saving up money for 10 years we have enough to start each of you children out to accomplish your dreams. I know you are afraid of leaving home, but be strong my little one. If you no longer wish to be a shang warrior then you can stay, I would surely enjoy your company. I just want you to be happy my Trena."

"Thank you, Ma. I am going to follow my dream and become a warrior." said Trena getting up and standing proud. Mrs.Swiftmove laughed. " That's my little Trena."
