May Goddess Feasts

April 28-May 3-- Flora. Embodiment of the flowering of all nature. She was also the patron of prostitutes, and was celebrated with a mass orgy: passing around of obscene medallions, scattering beans, and making love to passerby. During this Floralia, the female body was especially honored -- it was a festival of nude women.
1-- Maia. Greek and Roman. In Greece, she was "grandmother", "midwife", or "wise one". Originally a goddess of the night sky, then one of the Pleiades. Romans identified her with their fire-goddess of the same name, she ruled the forces of growth, warmth, and sexual heat.
6-- Inghean Bhuidhe. Ireland. The Yellow-Haired Girl, she ruled the beginning of summer, and was honored on the first day of summer, with rituals around a sacred well.
