Chemical Formulas & Compounds Chapter 7

Chemical Names & Formulas

Section 7.1

Al (SO )

Subscript refers to the # atoms

Subscripts refers to # O

Subscript refers to everything inside the parenthesis

Monatomic Ions - ions formed from a single atom

p.203 in textbook

All the negative ions are called "ide."

Binary Ionic Compounds - compounds composed of 2 different elements

List the positive ion first

Negative ion second

Charges "cross over" to form subscripts

Nomenclature - methods of naming chemical compounds

- Positive ions with 2 different charges - use roman #

Polyatomic Ions - ions containing 2 or more atoms covalently bonded to form an ion which can react with other atoms forming an ionic bond.

p.208 table 7-4

"ate" larger # of O atoms

"ite" smaller # of O atoms

Naming acids: p.211 table 7-7

Molecular Compounds (covalent)

Old way p.210 table 7-5

List the least electronegative element first

Use prefixes to denote the number of atoms of each type
