RCA 6K3

I have to admit that I wanted this RCA console pretty bad when I bought it. Its a model 6K3 an I think its from the 1936 model year. There were a bunch of tombstones made with this chassis too. This one has three bands and I restored the electronics so that it works well on all bands with a short wire antenna. This one had a bad power transformer which needed replaced. I picked up a replacement from Playthings of the Past, installed it an away she went. Its a nice radio and I love that speaker.

I bought the radio from an ebay seller in Pittsburgh. The radio itself was $49 and the shipping was about the same. Although pricey, it was the best packaging job I had ever seen. They put it into a large box and sprayed liquid foam (into bags) around the radio. As the foam dried, it made a solid foam form around the radio that protected this little guy on it 1500 mile trip.

Although the cabinet looks pretty rough in the "before" pictures, there was only one spot of missing veneer on the lower right side of the radio, probably due to moisture damage. This happened to be at a nice big seam, so replacing it was easy. I refinished it in lacquer, using the minwax stains mixed in with the lacquer for toning.

I paid too much for the radio (when you consider shipping) but I had just gotten beat on a local auction for another console by a buck or two and this was my response. In retrospect, I'm glad I bought it. I like its lines and it finished out quite nice.
