Cookies as Big as Lily Pads

• 1/2 c shortening
• 1 c sugar
• 1 c dark molasses
• 1/2 c water
• 4 c flour
• 1-1/2 tsp salt
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1-1/2 tsp ground ginger
• 1/2 tsp ground cloves
• 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
• 1/4 tsp allspice

Directions:

Mix together shortening and sugar, stir in water and molasses.

Sift together dry ingredients and blend into shortening mix.

Cover and chill dough overnight.

Preheat oven to 375F.

Roll out 1/4 inch thick on floured surface. Cut with 3 inch cookie cutter.

Place on greased sheet. Sprinkle cookies with sugar (optional).

Bake for 10 to 12 mins. You need to leave cookies on sheet for 2 mins after baking to keep them from breaking.
