Various Artists - Something Disturbing
I loved working on this project! All the songs here have some kind of creepy vibe in them.
  1. Dick Dale - Misirlou
I always like to start a cd out with a bang and this cut with the byte from Pulp Fiction is really a slap in the face. The surf guitar tune itself isn't really that disturbing but the sound byte is kind of shocking and I think it starts the cd moving in the right direction.
  2. Tin Machine - Baby Universal

  3. Once again we aren't in the super scary mode yet but the odd sweeping synth tones have a creepy vibe and it's bizzare when Bowie says "Hello humans, nothing starts tomorrow. I'm the baby now." I was amazed when I saw this performed on SNL. The drummer is a real creepy Lurch-type character that had a baby doll swinging from his bass drum. On the drumbeats the doll would get kicked by the drum.
  4. Wall Of Voodoo - Ring Of Fire

  5. Here we enter full-fledged Creepydom. We're in weird city with this strange cover. I love this interpretation. I also put it in my Ring Of Fire compilation (my rule of thumb is that I can put a song in 2 compilations before it's burnt out).
  6. Victor - Victor

  7. The song from the album from the group of the same name. Actually it's Alex Lifeson's [Rush] solo project. An ultra-scary track of murder, mayhem and madness is a poem by W.H. Auden set to music.
  8. Pink Floyd - Brain Damage
    Eclipse

  9. Ahh Brain Damage. No musical essay on madness could be complete without it. The odd laughter is from Syd Barrett after he actually did go mad (actually just fried his brain on LSD). It segues unceremoniously into Eclipse so I left it on but I shortened the heartbeats at the end and increased the volume so you can hear the voice say "There is no darkside of the moon. In fact, it's all dark."
  1. Trip Shakespeare - Toolmaster Of Brainerd

  2. This Minnesota band penned this great little quirky tune. Although not lyrically scary it has a creepy guitar whine throughout. I can't go anywhere near the twin cities without having this infectious song brought to mind.
  3. Violent Femmes - Gone Daddy Gone

  4. Not sure why I find this xylophone-enriched Femmes song so compelling. Probably the vocals of Gordon Gano. It is disturbing. Note to self: listen to Country Death Song for possible inclusion on Something Even More Disturbing.
  5. Man Or Astroman - Reverb 10,000

  6. Always a fan of this surf band disguised as astronauts, I found some errie sounds on this accurately named track.
  7. Bim Skala Bim - Brain Damage

  8. When I find a cover song that's really intensly different from the original, I'm always tempted to add it to the cd a few songs down the line from the original version. This one especially cried out to me. Let's make a ska song out of a Pink Floyd tune. And remember, nothing say's "I'm insane" like a vibrato trombone.
  9. Bruce Dickinson - Cyclops

  10. The frontman from Iron Maiden proves he can go solo, scare your pants off and still not sound like IM. I love the haunting moans that prove it's the vocal quality that creates the mood, not the lyrical content.
  11. Bjork - Army Of Me

  12. A disturbing industrial/dance pulse invades this great Bjork song.
  13. Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead

  14. This is the grandaddy of all scary songs. The weird reverbed guitars along with Peter Murphy's haunting over-enunciated vocals compel you to visualize this scene of the undead. Peter Murphy leads you to the vampire's lair. Hope you stocked up on stakes and crucifixes.
  15. Foo Fighters - Down In The Park

  16. This cover of an obscure Gary Numan tune has a very haunting feel to it.
  17. Electric Hellfire Club - Charles In Charge

  18. This is great. From the TV Terror compilation, this death/goth band twists the Charles In Charge theme song into a cultist Charles Manson anthem. "Charles in charge of our guns and our knives. Charles in charge of who lives and who dies ... I want Charles in charge of me."
  19. Barnes & Barnes - Something's In The Bag

  20. This is the scariest song in the world! The guys who brought you Fish Heads (Bill Mumy & Robert Haimer) are the biggest freaks ever. Their music is phenomenal and this is their scariest track except for maybe Cemetary Girls or Dead Baby Hunt (or is that one just disgusting?). If you turn off the lights and listen closely it will make you crap your pants!
  21. Phantasmagoria - The Dead Guy Song

  22. Ah yes, a great local band that split up before they ever made it to stardom (hi Stephanie!). This is a creepy song straight from the headlines about some high school kids who find a dead body "but nobody called the police".
  23. Korn - Freak On A Leash

  24. Wow! A scary guitar motif buttresses a breathless vocal in this modern classic.
