As spring arrives, I am delighted to find yet another open-source alternative to overpriced software. This time, it is in a genre which has until recently not had any worthwhile alternatives to (the immensely complicated and expensive) commercial offerings: 3D Modeling and Animation

The free Blender 3D application seems capable of anything that Commercial software can do, with the added bonus of being runnable on multiple operating systems, including my personal favourite: Mac OS X. Achieving the same quality of work is most likely only possible after the immense learning curve though, and I eagerly accept the challenge.
