one on one with carly from only so lucky

INTERVIEWER: hello carly
CARLY: hello hows it going?
INTERVIEWER: its going pretty good..a little tired cause its hot outside....humidity sucks..it drains me
CARLY: tru dat yo...its hella hot here too
INTERVIEWER: so tell me how long have you been playing guitar and what made you start playing?
CARLY: well...i've been messing around on it since i was a little kid, my dad always had an acoustic laying around. but i've really been serious about learning the technicalities of it for about a year and a half. I just took the acoustic into my room and started learning chords and putting them together. It started getting fun, so I asked for a guitar for christmas...got one and an amp, and i've been "messing around" ever since.
INTERVIEWER: wow...thats really cool....what kind of music were you listening to when you were growing up...and how much affect did it have on you with playing guitar?
CARLY: Well...when i was really little, i was a country kid...i did it all, cowboy boots, line dancing you name it. sadly, that phase wore out, and through elementary school, i got into a little hiphop stuff, with artists like TLC. towards the end of elementary school, i got more into the grunge and alternative scene like silverchair and pearl jam. i didn't really have much of a musical identity in junior high, the most music i payed attention to was in band class. then high school hit, and i went through a phase where i needed to be accepted, so i listened to all the pop stuff...yuck. finally I started developing my own opinions on music my sophomore year, and got into more punk stuff, and that led me into all the various indie persuasions. I don't think my earlier tastes have affected me much, I try to play harder, emotional stuff. I like that better. I try to steer clear of the pop stuff, unfortunately, sometimes it just comes out that way.
INTERVIEWER: thats a really good thing that you were into grunge, punk, indie rock stuff..especially at your tender age of 16..most kids now listen to the shitties shit...maybe its because im older or something..
CARLY: hahaha, the shitties shit? what is that?
INTERVIEWER: shittiest shit
INTERVIEWER: shit beyond shit
CARLY: ah okay...that makes more sense
INTERVIEWER: you have to excuse me i say weird things sometimes
CARLY: oh thats okay...so do I...no biggie
CARLY: by the way, i should mention that autophobics do not eat broccoli
INTERVIEWER: oh really..do they eat spinach?
CARLY: eh, i'm not sure about that one...
INTERVIEWER: hahaha..thats pretty strange carly.....anywho...what bands really influenced you...gimme 10
CARLY: ah my top ten huh?? okay...this may take a minute...in no particular order...
1. weezer
2. alkaline trio
3. the juliana theory
4. sunny day real estate
5. the waking hours
6. the weakerthans
7. REO speedwagon
8. voodoo glow skulls
9. osker
10. groovie ghoulies
CARLY: very diverse...
INTERVIEWER: yes,yes indeed....its good to be diverse..i believe you should never limit yourself with music ,cause theres good music in every genre, and of course theres bad music in every genre as well...diversity can add to your own music..which brings me to my next questions...how many bands have you played with....and where did only so lucky come from?
CARLY: i agree with that...okay, well...i've played with one band really...onlysolucky...however it never really existed til now. it used to be my friend adam and I, he plays bass. then we recruited a friend to sing a song, and she kinda just stayed. i soon realized though, that i was alone in the drive and determination department, and my two friends decided they didn't want to hold me back. i was offered an opportunity to join another band in my area, but they did not follow up with it, so that fell through as well. finally, I got tired of playing by myself and put up a few ads on the internet about a one member band looking to complete it. not many people replied, one or two maybe. as far as onlysolucky, our name used to be autophobic, reminiscent of our sadder scarier days, but we decided to go with a more optimistic name, and landed with onlysolucky. its working out pretty good
INTERVIEWER: thats really interesting...now how did you meet the other guitar player....jovan....he's....not your typical looking guitar player..i know if i saw him walking down the street,i would never guess he played guitar, because of his height..he's built like a football or basketball player..i havent talked to him but i've seen him...just by looking at him...i can tell theres alot to him..i dunno i could be wrong..it just seems like an odd combination of two people...does that make you feel weird at all?
CARLY: well, jovan IMed me, in response to one of my ads i assume, i don't think i ever asked him. and we started talking and getting to know each other's music ideals and all. to be honest, I was a little weird about the combination at first, mainly about the age difference rather than the look but as i've talked to him more and gotten to know him better, i think the match will end up with more good than bad...definately
INTERVIEWER: interesting..
INTERVIEWER: so how are you two writing songs?
CARLY: well...thats a difficult process right now, considering the distance factor, but that will soon change. but um...so far, he hasn't heard me play...i hope he doesn't change his mind once he does...but i've heard a few short samples from him, and i've sent him some lyrics to mess around with, but thats as far as we've gotten on the co-writing process...i'm sure we both have our own individual songs written though of course
INTERVIEWER: so you guys are doing this through the net for now?
CARLY: yeah pretty much
INTERVIEWER: wow...i've never heard of that before.....thats a first for me...most people wouldn't dare to do something like that...you two are awesome...you get much props for that.So what are your plans for only so lucky in the near future?
CARLY: thanks thanks...its really not that much...we are still just getting a feel for what the other wants to do musically. the future to me really depends on what we can get done what with jovan being in the process of moving here, and I starting my senior year, and the busyness of everything, but we could be playing acoustic shows, or we could end up findind a drummer and a bassist real quick and working on a ful band sound. it really all depends on how events fold out
INTERVIEWER: thats a good way to look at it....well thats all the time we have for now..but i enjoyed this interview alot...I wish you guys all the luck in the world..i hope you guys rock California..it needs to be rocked...hahaha..but it was nice to meet you and i'll be interviewing you sometime in the next couple of months...
CARLY: thanks thanks...it was good meeing you too!...looking forward to our next interview!
