Documentary Overview
- The purpose of this project is to explore/examine the
experiences of young people in the U.S. between 1955-1972
- Your group will include a cast of characters who, between them,
have a wide variety of experiences with the major events of the period
Events your characters should be
involved in:
- Civil Rights Activism (Bus Boycott, Sit-Ins, School
Desegregation, Freedom Riders, Freedom Summer, etc.)
- Vietnam War (Draft, combat experiences, returning home, public
response & protest)
- Peace Corps/VISTA
- Silent Majority
- Vietnam Protest/Leftist Radicalism (SDS, Free Speech, Chicago 7,
etc.)
Research Requirements
(each person is
required to turn in the work
product from their research, including: notes, highlighted articles,
interviews, and a works cited page):

- online sources, especially the Shmoop U.S.
History Study Guides and the EbscoHost
History

- Go to "Advanced Search"
- It will take a little time, but if you play around with the
options I think you'll find that this is a very powerful search engine
with a wide variety of valuable documents
- existing documentaries
- oral histories and interviews with people who lived through this
period
Video Requirements
- One character for each type of situation, rest of group plays
supporting characters
- Mix between depicting events and “interview” footage
- Total length 5-6 minutes
- You will turn in a typed script on the day that the plays are
performed
