SME Weight Measurements

There are a few variation in the physical dimensions and designs of the weight-sets used in SME tonearms but in this page, I'll briefly run through those used for the Series 2 of SME 3009 and 3012 currently mounted on my decks.

If the pictures aren't big enough, click on them for larger images (so you can read better too!)

The shorter end of the L-shaped 'way rod' fits into the rear counterweight and is secured by a set-screw & metal plug combo.

Plug seems to be made from a bronze-like material.

This closeup also shows the varying length of the set-screws.

Thread pitch is the same (when I swapped screws but didn't measure pitch).

Next to the bronze plug is a set-screw/nylon plug combo that secures the big counterweight to the counterweight rod

The nylon contact probably minimize the possibility of scratching the chrome-plated rod.

complete_weightset This is a complete set of the weights section.

Top L>R:  Counterweight, main VTF & additional VTF weight.

Middle:   L-shaped 'way rod'

Bottom:   2 different set-screws & a spring-plunger & nylon plug for the main VTF weight.

The main VTF (Vertical Tracking Force) weight slides along the longer segment of the L-shaped 'way rod' and is held in position by the spring-plunger/nylon combo.

It has a 'coupling extension' where an additional VTF weight can be friction-fitted over.

Used on it's own for light tracking force, it slides at 0.25 gram increment on the scale.

The 4 slots serves as an 'expansion spring' of sorts and can secure the 2nd VTF weight very firmly.

The 2nd weight is used when heavier VTF is required by the cartridge.

It is slightly bigger than the 1st VTF weight and when used together, the VTF scale is adjusted by 0.5 gram increment.

The 2nd VTF weight (at the bottom) slips into the main VTF weight's 'coupling extension' ...
(correct terminology??)

This is a one-piece integrated rear counterweight.

Other design of the counterweight I own, is a two-piece-set,  that's divided at the 'line'
(next to the screw access hole).

The CW for the original 3012 series is a HUGE & HEAVY thing, same diameter but much longer... usually match with a one-piece long VTF weight.

Diameter reading being taken.

Top view of CW shows clearly the channel for the CW shaft (that connects to the armtube via a rubber bushing/coupler).

There's also a pic of the 'closed end' CW here.

AntiSkating weight or Bias weight.... hung with a fine nylon thread and often lost :o(

There seems to be a variation in the weight as well (not sure if that's due to different arm lengths... ie between 9 & 12 inch).

Nothing new here.... get these made...
... they're not cheap!

A assembled armament of weights looks like the picture here.

Disclaimer:
The measurements are taken to the best of my ability AND from a SME 3012 Series 2 that I OWN.
I have reasons to believe that all the components measured are original to that arm, and I'm not liable for any assumptions you make.

I would however, appreciate it very much, to be corrected by someone wiser than I.

Feel free to use the photos for your personal reference and if you need them at your site,
please ask...  just don't claim them as your own.
