Mon Calamari Star Cruisers are the backbone of the Rebel Alliance and, later, the New Republic fleet. After the Empire's invasion of Mon Calamari, the Calamari people began to develop a strong resentment for the Imperials. After the Imperial armies were driven back and off the planet, the Mon Calamari defected to the Rebel Alliance, taking with them a great fleet of MC80 Star Cruisers. The Mon Cal cruisers were originally designed as luxury cruisers and civilian ships but they were refitted with heavy weaponry and thick hull plating to serve as the perfect Alliance command ships. The Mon Calamari become totally dedicated to the Rebellion and began to construct huge shipyards in orbit around their homeworld. Every Mon Cal cruiser has a unique design because the Mon Calamari see everything they do, even their starship construction, as art. The Mon Calamari view this as the logical way to do it, but many starship designers find the process confusing. This method of design makes the MC80 cruiser difficult to repair, but the ships are so durable that repair is rarely needed. The Mon Cal Crusier Home One was the flagship of Admiral Ackbar during the attack on the second Death Star at Endor. It continued to act as a command ship for many more battles following the rise of the New Republic. The Home One is even more dangerous than a standar MC80 Cruiser. The Home One is equipped with 120 starfighters (10 squads), 29 turbolasrs, 36 ion cannons and numerous tractor beam projectors and shield generators. Mon Cal cruisers have unusually powerfull shields, because of the multiple genrators built to overlap one another in case of failure. Damaged shields can quickly be repaired or replaced even during the heat of battle, making it hard for Imperial ships to knock out a Cruiser's shields. There are also a number of more powerfull cruisers currently being produced, such as the MC80a, the MC80B (the Mon Remoda is an MC80B) and the MC90. All types of species serve aboard Mon Cal Cruisers, but the ships' command sections were designed to be crewed by Mon Calamari. The controls are designed to fit their unique anatomy, and the computers respond not only to keyboards but also to specific movements from the commander's chair. These controls are easy to handle for a Mon Cal, but most other species have much diffuculty trying to operate the Mon Cal Cruiser. Bridge displays are geared for the Mon Cal's visual spectrum, and to humans, these screens appear to be warped and distprted. Some famous Mon Calamari Cruisers include the before mentioned Home One, the Liberty (destroyed by Death Star II) and the Mon Remonda
