Just what is an Iron Fencer?
The Iron Fencer Tournament is the traveling trophy event of the Inland Empire. It is held at the University of Montana each spring. To earn the trophy, a fencer must compete in all three weapons. Results from each event earn the fencer points based upon how many competitors fenced that weapon. The fencer with the best overall point total after all three weapons is the Iron Fencer of the year and has his/her name engraved upon the traveling trophy.
The initial Iron Fencer Tournament was held in April, 2000. Matt Clausen, UMFC, was crowned the first ever Iron Fencer. Due to construction at the university, the Iron Fencer Tournament was not held during 2001.
The second, and hopefully now annual, Iron Fencer Tournament was held April, 2002. This year's event was a record breaking success, both in the number of individual event competitors and in the number of fencers willing to vie for the trophy. Matt Clausen returned to defend his title, doing so in grand fashion. He succesfully competed in all three events, taking the gold in each contest, and acheiving the first sweep in Iron Fencer history. In the course of this record breaking success, Matt also renewed his D in foil and earned his D in both epee and sabre.

Unfortunately, the Iron Fencer was once again put on hold in 2003 due to difficulties securing gym space. 2004 saw the return of the Iron Fencer Tournament, and Matt Clausen returned as well to defend his title once again. While this year did not see the clean sweep of 2002, Matt took first in foil, third in epee, and second in sabre to earn the three-peat and remain champion.
