This Light

All over this place
Sharp tongues are stabbin
At what they can’t see
Let’s give us a break
From hurt comin from you, comin from me
Too much good goes unnoticed
Of every child, woman and man
I know we would like to change this, but

“We only got two hands!”

Well, let the first one go to the left
Second one go to the right
Let’s put em together
And get ready to fight
Forgive you brother on your left
Forgive your sister on your right
Help pull us out of this darkness
And back up into this light!

From out of the trash
A young lady picks up what’s left
Of what we just ate
She wonders, “Should I ask for some cash?”
But “No,” says her pride, and besides
We just wouldn’t relate
Cause we’re too busy hating
Tryin to prove the other side wrong
Why can’t we see when we look at this lady
The only side that we’re all on?

And let the first hand go to the left
Second hand go to the right
Let’s get em together
And get ready to fight
Forgive you neighbor on your left
Forgive your neighbor on your right
Help pull us out of this darkness
And back up into this light!

I know-- things can be better
I know-- things can be right
The day we finally pull together
And forget about who’s “left” and who’s “right”

(And not a party in sight!)

In each lover’s face
You can see the desire
To love and be loved
So what will it take
Till we can give up our pride
And give all our love?
Yeah, brother I know it aint easy
To walk straight every day
But each step we move ahead with our families
Helps to light a brighter way

So let the right hand go in the left
Left hand go in the right
Take a look at each other
Say "Honey, let’s not fight”
Hold onto her with what’s left
Hold onto her cause it’s right
Help pull us out of this darkness
And back up into this light

Help pull us out of this darkness
And back up into this light!
