Lowestoft

28th/30th August 2004

If entertainment was handed out by the bucket loads, we got a skip full this weekend at Lowestoft. We (Jerry,  Kate & Ben) set off on Saturday the 28th at 2pm from Eastbourne to Lowestoft, first stop 100 meters down the road! with about 170 miles to go! While Kate popped in to stock up on drinks and nibbles for the journey I popped into Ladbrokes to place a £5 win double on at Newmarket. Finally we were on our way and arrived at Lowestoft at about 5.30pm. Dave (alias Del-Boy) and his crew from Maximum leisure were already setting up the stage, meanwhile on the tour bus we had chance to say our hello's, catch up on gossip and get a cup of tea. Dave Del-boy treated us to a wonderful meal in a local tavern, where we caught up on news and worked out final details for Dave's appearance at the Mini rally on Sunday. Our treat next week Dave & thanks.

We had arranged for D.C. to come back from his holiday in Spain a day early to be with us for the weekend and of course to be the star of the show. D.C. was picked up from Camelot at 9pm Sat and arrived at our hotel just past midnight and there was I thinking I was was going to be in bed by 12.30am! Wrong!! Dave took me to a local friend's pub called the Marina Keys where we played pool till about 3.45am, by then I was ready to drop! The owner of the pub showed us around the rest of his grounds and property which included a diner called 'Johnny's' This backed right onto to the Norfolk Broads river. He offered us one of his nineteen boats for the bank holiday Monday so we could all chill out with a trip up river. The 'one armed bandit' won most the games on the pool table too! Cheers DC.

At breakfast at 8am the next morning I looked & felt like death warmed up! D.C. Storm, Dave (Del-Boy) and the rest looked great! lol . We had a few hours to get ready and put on our best togs before setting off down the road for the start of Britain's most Easterly Mini Adventure. The performing acts were DC (as himself!) with look-alikes Del-Boy, Izzy Ozzy, Barely Connolly, Gary as Robbie Williams and Collette as Kylie. Also starring were Michelle Gayle,  The Cheeky Girls,  Dragon Heart, D-rail, Ben Franco, Abby and Iyce to name just a few, not to mention the 200 plus Mini's who had arrived during the morning! Also in attendance were BBC Suffolk Radio and Beach Radio both of whom enjoyed their interviews with Dave live on air!

One of Dave's main responsibilities of the day was to choose the winning Mini's. He really had no choice when selecting first prize, well who could resist the Mini used by Austin Powers in the movie, it was fantastic! Second prize was a Mini that was really sporty, the type that any kid would love to have with its go fast strips! Third was the oldest Mini there kept in its original condition, well done lads for the dedication and hard work involved keeping them on the road. Thanks to all the Mini's that attended, see you next year?!

The long arm of the law was well aware that Dave was coming into town and couldn't do enough to help out! Behind Dave on pic 2 you can see Kate in Dave's marquee, set up right next to the stage.

Thanks for the promotional work lads! The long arm of the law

This was our Bens chance to wrap Storm up on stage! (in toilet roll as part of the 'Mummy' game!) along with members of the audience, while the lads bounced off each other entertaining Lowestoft.

Below are pictures of The Cheeky girls, both Dave and I had always said that the Cheeky girls were only good from the neck down, but what an eye opener they were, we could have never been so wrong! Massive respect for the whole show they put on, true professionals and stunning too!

What a crowd!

We all had a really wicked time but as usual the fun did not finish after the show! Exhausted as we all were some of us managed to get out for a drink after the show (while the others just crashed out lol).

Monday morning we loaded our cars and headed for the South Pier where we met up with Dawn (the organiser), her parents, Del boy Dave and his wife Helen, DC and Storm to discuss the previous days events over a coffee. The event, the first of its kind in Lowestoft was a huge success, the talk of the town. Dave was asked if he was a lookalike! lol Then we all went our separate ways, each of us mulling over the weekends high points. Some of ours were Izzy Ozzy, who we met for the first time, so much like the real thing, Barely Connolly (Ben's adopted Grandad!) the Cheeky girls act, true professionals,  & the size of the crowd!

To top off the whole weekend I then found out that my £5 bet came in and I collected £100!

A few thank yous: To Dawn, Del Boy Dave, Helen & son Paul, the maximum leisure crew, all the acts, all the mini drivers and the three local 'minders' Martin Smith, Wes Gould and Steven Boggis.

Next weekend it all kicks off again with the biggest of the summer's Crimestoppers events at Bowood House, Calne, Wilts from 10am-6pm, see you there!
