Jerry & Kate's Wedding

4th June 2005

The day started well after Friday's near disasters, with Dave & Storm being the very first to arrive at 8.15am! We had been warned they could arrive in the early hours though so that timing was a blessing, no really, we mean it! Dave and Jerry dashed off to the barbers while Storm kept a very nervous Kate company, it was great to have them both here with Dave's words of advice and Storms relaxed attitude to the whole affair.

Next to arrive were our very good friends Paul & Ian who were in charge of looking after guests and generally running people around, they made great 'gofers' for the day, thanks guys!

At 12 o'clock Kate rushed off to the hairdressers while Jerry & Dave sorted out websites and caught up on all the gossip. Kate returned about 2.30pm with the flowers and Dave asked 'who's that little girl over there?' not recognizing Kate! Kate then disappeared upstairs with Storm and Elaine who added the finishing touches to the make up and outfit, thank you to Elaine for all her help in the build up to the big day. By this time Uncle Albert had arrived with the Trotter van and the Capri Ghia and the neighbours were beginning to gather round.

Then of course it became manic with guests arriving by the minute until our house was packed to bursting point with little Ben complaining that he couldn't move in here! Just before 4pm the limo arrived and people began making their way outside. Kate made her way gingerly down the stairs and outside to be greeted by newspaper reporters, guests and neighbours all gasping at the dress.  After a round of ooo's and ahs and many flashes from the cameras Dave, Jerry, Storm, Kate, Melanie, Ben and the photographer Adrian climbed into the limo for the short journey to the Castle, followed of course by a very big cavalcade including the trotter van driven by Uncle Albert and Del Boy's Capri Ghia. It was a sight to see!

Everyone enjoyed the champagne in the limo (except poor Kate who was feeling sick with nerves!) The limo entered the castle grounds and as it rounded the final corner Dave shouts to Storm 'Hey Babe, f**king hell, look at that castle, what a location! Why do they all copy my house?!' We think that all the other guests were suitably impressed, it really is a perfect venue for a wedding, photographs just don't do the place justice, do go and visit it if you are ever in the area! We climbed out of the limo to cheers and camera flashes as well as a news team from BBC SE Today.

As a local reporter said 'the two cars owned by Uncle Albert, set the scene that couldn’t have been written better by Only Fools and Horses writer John Sullivan, as they popped and chugged amidst the picturesque landscape of Herstmonceux Castle' Del Boy and Uncle Albert couldn't wait to get into the castle and search for another Louis the 14th Chandelier!

All of the look-alikes, the bride and groom and Dave were assembled by the press on the bridge over the moat leading to the castle entrance for photo's. There were so many cameras that we didn't know where to look first, we felt like Hollywood stars! Then the Bride took Uncle Albert's Arm and followed the 60 or so guests over the bridge and into the castle. The guests, groom and best man took their places in the conference room while Kate and Uncle Albert waited for their cue to enter. The music started; 'Going To the Chapel' by the Dixie Cups and Kate walked down the isle with Albert having overcome her nerves completely by this time.

The ceremony began with Kate saying a few words, remembering people who couldn't be there, thanking her brother Chris who she is very close to and speaking directly to Jerry to thank him for the 16 years they had already shared and explaining to all who had gathered that Jerry had made her the person she was today. Kate likened it to a very famous song 'Because You Loved Me' which had been playing before she entered the room.   Then the registrar took over and asked the ever familiar question 'If any person here present knows of any reason why these two should not be joined in matrimony' At this point Dave pipes up and says 'Yep, I do' and after a long pause, 'Oh, there was but I forgot' and sat down again to muted and nervous laughter from the guests. The vows began and it was now Jerry's turn to experience the nerves that Kate had suffered from all day.  Yes, you guessed it, Jerry fluffed his lines and Kate of course made it through perfectly! (much to everyone's surprise!)  As the vows ended Dave stood up and said 'Wait, I've remembered now!' To which the registrar replied 'Sorry mate, To late!' Laughter all round!

Uncle Albert then said a few words of congratulations before Jerry & Kate sat down to sign the register. The sixty guests roared, as the two witnesses, Dave Courtney and Uncle Albert, fought over who was going to be first to sign the register which led to Dave pushing the old seaman flying in what was a fine display of acting by Ray James.

After the signing was complete it was Dave's turn to say a few words: 'as we all know' he began 'marriage is no bed of roses and there will be arguments, so I've brought you something to help sort out those fights' he then produced a gold knuckleduster from his pocket and gave it to Kate, saying 'whoever gets to it first wins, OK' Then Dave pulled a packet of Viagra from his other pocket and gave them to Jerry saying 'and you're going to need these mate!' The congregation then fell about laughing yet again!

Jerry & Kate then walked happily back down the isle to 'Starting Over' by John Lennon and headed outside for champagne TV interviews and photographs. Luckily it remained sunny!

After many photo's, press and TV interviews all the guests made there way in a very long cavalcade to the Horseshoe Inn for what was to be a truly amazing reception led by Del Boy with his cabaret and karaoke. Billy Connolly, Del Boy, Storm and Adrian Doughty all kept the crowd entertained with songs and comedy and even Dave himself, for the first time ever in public,  sang a few numbers to thunderous applause. Storm of course was magnificent singing 'Wind Beneath My Wings' for the bride and groom and received a very well deserved standing ovation! In the only really traditional part of the day, the Bride and Groom had the first very romantic dance to 'Lady In Red' and you can see why!

The whole day was a huge success, a day no one who attended will ever forget as it was so unique and different, funny, yet charming. Dave said afterwards 'that was a wedding a pop star would have been proud of, if you could have got a pot and put in all the ingredients for a perfect wedding that was it, from the venues to the clothes and entertainment. There was something for everyone! The phone hasn't stopped ringing with people reminiscing and complimenting us, all saying what a wonderful time they had.

We really enjoyed the day, in fact we are still on a high and don't want to ever come down!

In a quote from our good friend and local reporter Tracy Moles she said: 'It was hilariously funny from start to finish as these professional impersonators did their best to entertain guests throughout the day, without taking the edge off of what was a first class wedding' see article below:

DOUBLE DO AT HERSTMONCEUX

‘He who comes first wins’ was the advice given by reformed gangster Dave Courtney, to Jerry and Kate Daly, as they exchanged their wedding vows at a hilariously bizarre wedding ceremony held at Herstmonceux Castle at the weekend.

Celebrity look-alikes who included Del Boy, Uncle Albert, and comedian Billy Connolly, were those included on the guest list for the wedding of Jerry and Kate Daly, from 13, Alfred Rd, Kingsmere. Kate said, ‘ I wanted to do something different’, so she booked a castle and invited her look-alike friends dressed in character.

The original famous Trotters' three wheeled van, driven by old sea dog, Uncle Albert, and Del Boys Capri Ghia, left Kingsmere Estate, in cavalcade led by a white Mercedes limo, which carried the couple and best man, (the real) reformed London Gangster and best selling novelist Dave Courtney, to the five o clock ceremony held at Herstmonceux castle, on Saturday.

The two cars owned by Uncle Albert, real name-Ray James, set the scene that couldn’t have been written better by Only Fools and Horses, writer John Sullivan, as they popped and chugged amidst the picturesque landscape of Herstmonceux Castle.

It was hilariously funny from start to finish as these professional impersonators done their best to entertain guests throughout the day, without taking the edge of what was a first class wedding.

Jerry and Kate, met on a blind date sixteen years ago and moved in together three months later when Kate’s eldest child Melanie, now eighteen was two. They also have a 12, year old son Ben, and have lived in Kingsmere for five years. Ex nurse Kate, looked stunning in a hand made red satin dress, with a rose over shoulder overlay comprising of gold beads that she had shipped over from Asia, especially for her big day.

Uncle Albert, gave Kate away at the half-hour civil ceremony of which he said, ‘It was an honour’.

During the ceremony, which was a far cry from old traditions, and at the point where the congregation were asked, if there is anybody present who knows of any lawful impediment etc,  Dave Courtney, noted for his black humor, piped up, ‘Yeah, I do’,  and after a long pause said, ‘Oh there was but I forgot it’ and five minutes later said, ‘I remember it now,’  had guests falling off their seats laughing.

Kate gave a warm tendering speech as she acknowledged her love for Jerry saying, ‘ If there was one song that sums it up for me today, it is, ‘Because You Loved Me’. She went on, ‘A few years back I wasn’t the person I am today. I lacked in confidence and it was Jerry, which helped to build that confidence back up over the last sixteen years. It was Jerry that has made me what I am today’.

The sixty guests roared, as the two witnesses, Dave Courtney and Uncle Albert, fought over who was going to be first to sign the register which led to Dave pushing the old seaman, flying in what was a fine display of acting by Ray James.

The best mans speech was a classic during the ceremony when Dave Courtney, told the newlyweds, ‘ Marriage isn’t a bed of roses. You will have your arguments’ and with that presented the bride with a half-inch thick solid gold knuckle-duster as a wedding gift, adding ‘He who comes first wins’. Mr. Courtney, then presented the groom with a packet of Viagra.

Asking Del Boy, real name-David Byrne, what he thought of the ceremony he replied, ‘Cushty, but to tell you the truth I’m here trying to finding the owner, cos I’m trying to get hold of a Louis the fourteenth’.

Billy Connelly, impersonator- real name Bob Lucas, joined these sharp witted professionals, who included Adrian Doughty, a professional comedian, famous for his role in the ‘Oddballs, a trio of naked balloon dancers, for a whole evenings worth of belly aching entertainment that was held at the Horseshoe Inn, Windmill Hill, for the reception.

Adrian said, ‘Jerry and Kate, are a lovely couple and have raised a lot for charity. As personal friends it was the least we can do for them’.
