The Tree at the End of the Road

Craig toddles merrily out into the April sun. Somewhere a coyote howls its lament to the sky. The chickens scurry away from the excited child's feet. A few feet away Craig's mother hums as she hangs the morning wash on the line. The voices of men can be heard over the clanging of pails. Just another day on the Smith farm, or was it?

A cat catches Craig's attention as it jogs across the yard and down the dead-end road. Taking up the chase, Craig is not noticed by his mom. The only one who does notice is a stallion in a nearby pasture. Nobody is around when the boy crawls under the twisted roots of the sequoia tree at the end of the road.

A shout of alarm goes out when a worried mother notices her youngest child is missing. Jack, Craig's father, and his other sons come running to help find the lost child. They begin their search, calling out Craig's name.

Not far away the small child sleeps, unaware of any danger. The sequoia keeps all sounds of the outside world away from the boy. Small whispers of untold wonder drift around Craig. A story starts to unfold in Craig's young mind....
