    TOWER HISTORY:

The Tower of London was founded by the powerful, belligerent, and devious William of Normandy, also known as William the Conqueror. William the Conqueror was the cousin of England’s King Edward. At this particular period in time, King Edward was looking to pass his seat of rule and leadership to someone of the royal bloodline. William soon learned that King Edward did not favor him and so the king passed the throne to his brother-in-law, Harold. William became so outraged when King Edward would not supplant his blessings with him, that he became aflame with envy; endowed with wild and ravaging jealousy. William of Normandy decided that he would hold authority no matter what the cost. He hastily set out to annihilate Harold and claim his supposed title. On October 14, 1066, William and his army met up with Harold at Hastings and slew him in a rousing joust of wills. On Christmas day of 1066, William returned to England to be crowned king immediately. He constructed forts within the English countryside to remind the British citizens of his brawn and competency. William had a mind to restore an old Roman fort in the Southeastern corner of London near the Thames river. He ordered that this fort be removed in 1078 to be replaced by a massive stone stronghold. This would be the "symbol of his power, a fortress for his defense, and a prison for his enemies". William christened the new tower “The Tower of London”.

Twenty years later, the tower had been completed. Walls were over 100 feet high and were also fifteen feet thick in some places. William added new quarters to the tower over the course of the years. He added a chapel, apartments, guardrooms, and crypts. Additionally, King Henry III whitewashed the tower, added a church, and widened the gardens area. Although the tower was still a prison, Henry had turned the White Tower into an astonishing palace worthy of the royalty of England. He entertained many important honorees, many of which came with animals as gifts. Near the drawbridge of the tower, Henry built the Lion Tower, a zoo where visitors would be greeted with sounds of roaring beasts. The Tower of London continued to be a stronghold amongst England’s elite. Executions of the monarch’s enemies were carried out on a regular day-to-day basis. The Execution site was formerly placed in the Garden Tower and was later renamed “The Bloody Tower.”

    PARANOMAL ACTIVITY OF THE TOWER-

Because the Tower of London was the death place for thousands of criminals, it is no doubt that the tower would not be complete without its lengthy list of treasons, tragedies, and ghost stories. One of the most famous sites of the tower lies on the Traitor’s Gate, the entryway to a certain death. The Traitors' Gate was the Watergate entrance for criminals damned after trials at Westminster. It dates to 1240 when Henry III distended the fortress by erecting extra defense works. When the work was nearing completion on St George's day in 1240, there was a cataclysmic storm that resulted in the tower’s foundation being destabilized. This resulted in the collapsing of the illustrious Traitor’s Gate. When the circumstances were repeated identically a year later, a questionnaire unearthed that a priest declared to have seen the ghost of Sir Thomas Becket striking the walls with a crucifix. He said that the ghost was proclaiming that the new building was not for the common good but "for the injury and prejudice of the Londoners, my brethren". Since it was the King's grandfather who had caused the death of the saint, he felt it was wise to include a small oratory in the tower of the new building dedicating it to Sir Thomas Becket. Its rooms have always had a reputation of being haunted. Doors open and close without cause and the figure of a monk in a brown robe has been witnessed, gruesomely hovering down the halls of the tower. Ghostly footsteps including the idiosyncratic slap of monastic sandals are often heard.

Another interesting tale lies within the Green Chapel, the ghost of Anne Boyelin. Anne Boleyn was the most celebrated of the wives of Henry VIII. Anne was condemned for secretive acts of treason against King Henry. Guards came for her on the morning of May 19 to take her to the Tower Green, where she was to be allowed the decency of a private execution. She wore a red petticoat under a loose, dark grey gown of damask trimmed in fur. Over that she wore a mantle of ermine. Her long, dark hair was bound up under a simple white linen coif over which she wore her usual headdress. She made a short speech before kneeling at the block. Her ladies removed the headdress and tied a blindfold over her eyes. The sword itself had been hidden under the straw. The swordsman cut off her head with one swift stroke.” Her ghost has frequently been sighted both on the Green and more outstandingly in the Chapel Royal situated within the parameters of the White Tower. Another humorous tale was that of Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester. Eleanor Humphrey, wife of the kings uncle, was charged with conspiring to kill the king by melting a wax image of him before a fire. The British took quick action toward anyone who showed this kind of behavior. The treason artists were dealt with quickly either by the axe or by punishment in the torture chamber.
