The Early Years

Like many young children, I used to draw on my bedroom walls. What ever came to mind would be expressed on that huge canvas of a wall. I believe rainbows were a favorite. Of course, there is one problem with drawing on the bedroom walls. She’s called M-O-M. I had drawn on the walls two times, and both times my mom scolded me (as any mom would). I was tired of putting all of that effort into creating my masterpieces and then having them erased. I decided it was time to “wise-up.” I took my crayons into the closet and there I found the serenity I needed to make yet another lovely mural of rainbows and stars. I thought I was so smart. Of course, I wasn’t. She found my little cave-like hieroglyphs. This time however, she didn’t spend as much effort in scolding me. She simply brought a bucket and a sponge into my room and told me I was not going anywhere until the wall was clean. As I whined, “My arm is falling off,” I vowed to never do it again. Surely, I never did.

Luckily, my artistic visions did not end with those murals. On another occasion, I had decided to play the role of interior designer. I thought the kitchen needed a little more flair. I had figured out what it was. The fridge needed something. That is when I spotted a roll of mailing stamps. ($100 dollars worth, actually). To the fridge they went, one by one. It probably would have been easier if the stamps had been self-adhesive back then. (Talk about empty calories). None the less, A spontaneous collage of the ol’ red, white and blue was the end result.

At the age of about ten, I wasn’t satisfied with having only been a painter and an interior designer. I decided I would try the title of “Photographer.” I talked my younger sister into putting on her best T-shirt and jeans. (Even made her tuck in the shirt). Then I carefully placed her next to a bush of Cosmo flowers in our front yard. There she stood next to the bush. I told her to give me a serious face and not to look at the camera but away from it, as if she were thinking about something. I actually still have that picture. I have to admit, it’s not too bad for a ten-year-old.
