Songbow

Songbows are the chosen servants of Naiaral, devoted to archery and spreading the appreciation of music across Migdalia. They are typically found working with elves, whose appreciation for music is great. Common acts of songbows include hunting evil creatures who enter the elves’ forests, teaching commoners and bards new songs and melodies, and training anyone who wishes to learn the basics of archery.

Songbows are often somewhat flighty, and are prone to wander the world simply to see what’s out there. Many songbows eventually settle in elven lands, who treat songbows as treasured guests, regardless of their race. Many songbows develop close relationships with bards and minstrels, and may even develop friendly rivalries between each other. Wherever a songbow travels, they preach the glory of Naiaral and seek to spread joy and happiness to those they encounter.

Clerics are the most common songbows, though a large number of rangers also adopt this class.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Songbow prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Songbows are proficient with all simple weapons, all bows, and all types of armor. Songbows are especially fond of using their deity’s favored weapon, a longbow.

Spellcasting: A songbow continues training with magic. Thus, at 2nd level and every other level thereafter, the character gains new spells per day and spells known as if she had also gained a level in whatever divine spellcasting class she belonged to prior to adding this prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that level would have gained (improved chance of controlling or rebuking undead, metamagic or item creation feats, etc).

Music Spells: A songbow can pray for and receive any Music domain spell as if it were on her divine spell list. The spell uses a spell slot of a level equal to its level in the Music domain list.

Lyrical Soul (Ex): Songbows consider music to be a divine gift from Naiaral, and hold it in the highest regards. A songbow may add her class level to her bard level when determining which bardic music effects she has access to, the duration of such effects, and how powerful such effects are.

Defensive Shot (Ex): A songbow of at least 2nd level has learned to use her bow effectively in while engaged in close combat. She no longer provokes attacks of opportunities for firing a bow in melee.

Soul Song (Su): At 3rd level, the songbow may inspire hope within her allies through her singing. She may use this ability a number of times per day equal to her class level, as a standard action. This effect lasts for as long as her allies hear her sing, and for 5 rounds thereafter. While singing, the songbow cannot cast spells, activate magical items by spell completion (such as scrolls), or activate magical items by magic word (such as wands). Just as for casting a spell with a verbal component, a deaf songbow has a 20% chance to fail when attempting to use this ability. If she fails, the attempt still counts against her daily limit. While singing, the songbow’s allies within 60 feet of her gain a +2 morale bonus on saving throws, attack rolls, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls.

< At 6th level, the songbow gains the ability to sing a single note of utter clarity, piercing beauty, and paralyzing awe. All enemies within 60 feet of the songbow must succeed at a Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 + the songbow’s class level + her Charisma modifier) or become paralyzed for 1d4 rounds. Each use of this ability requires a standard action, and requires one use of the songbow’s soul song uses for the day.

At 9th level, the songbow gains the ability to inspire heroism in her allies through her song. While singing, each of the songbow’s allies within 60 feet of her gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws, attack rolls, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls, as well as temporary hit points equal to her fives times her Charisma modifier. This effect lasts for as long as her allies hear her sing, and for 5 rounds thereafter. Each use of this ability requires a standard action, and requires one use of the songbow’s soul song uses for the day.

Sonic Arrows (Su): Combining Naiaral’s love of both music and archery, a songbow of 4th level or higher is able to imbue her arrows with ringing sonic energy. Every arrow fired by the songbow is considered to be a sonic arrow, dealing 1d6 additional points of sonic damage on a successful hit. This sonic damage takes the form of a single, crystal clear note, which the songbow can choose as she sees fit. By altering the notes assigned to each arrow, the songbow is able to create simple, yet pure, snippets of music while she attacks. During any round in which the songbow fires three or more arrows (regardless of whether or not the arrows strike her opponents), she creates a countersong effect in a 60 foot radius around her, which lasts until the start of her next turn.

During this time, any creature affected by a sonic or language-dependant magical attack may use the songbow’s highest attack roll during the initial attack in place of its own saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the attack roll proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the countersong ability is already under the effects of a noninstantaneous sonic or language-dependant magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it hears the countersong, but it must use the songbows’s attack roll result for the save. Countersong has no effect against effects that don’t allow saves.

Divine Archery (Su): At 5th level, the songbow begins to feel Naiaral guiding her attacks. The songbow may now add her Wisdom modifier to her attack rolls with bows, and her Charisma modifier to damage rolls with arrows.

Pin Cushion (Su): At 7th level, the songbow gains the ability to unleash a barrage of arrows at a single opponent. As a full-round action, the songbow may make a full attack against an opponent with her bow, provided that opponent is within one range increment from the songbow. The songbow may add any number of additional attacks to this attack routine, up to a number of attacks equal to her Wisdom modifier. These additional attacks are made at her full attack bonus. For each attack she adds in this manner, she imposes a -1 penalty to every attack she makes this round. These attacks may only be directed at a single opponent; the songbow may not split up her attacks.

This ability may be combined with the Rapid Shot and Manyshot feats, adding more arrows to the songbow’s attack routines. All attack penalties generated by those feats stack with the penalties generated by this ability. All attacks must still be directed towards a single opponent.

Naiaral’s Blessing (Su): At 8th level, the songbow has become fully comfortable with trusting Naiaral to guide her attacks, firing without thought. If the songbow takes a full-round action to pray to Naiaral, she may fires a single arrow , taking 20 on the attack roll (an action not normally allowed with attack rolls). This attack cannot result in a critical hit.

Symphonic Shot (Su): At 10th level, the songbow gains the ability to imbue a single arrow with musical energy. She may imbue an arrow in this way once per day as a move action. If the arrow is not fired immediately after being imbued, the effect is lost. While imbued, the arrow is treated as a sonic burst weapon. The songbow may choose to fire the arrow at a creature, object, or a specific location; should the arrow miss whatever she is aiming at, the effect is lost.

A successful hit allows the arrow to deal damage to the creature or object normally (if applicable). In addition, the arrow bursts into a painfully loud symphony of sounds, damaging creatures and objects near the point of impact. All creatures and objects within a 30-foot radius of the point of impact take 5d6 points of sonic damage per round, and must attempt a Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 + the songbow’s class level + her Charisma modifier) or become permanently deafened. The arrow continues to radiate sonic energy for a number of rounds equal to the songbow’s class level. An arrow striking a creature or object may be removed as a standard action, which provokes attacks of opportunity.

Any creature affected by a sonic or language-dependant magical attack within the symphonic arrow’s area of effect may use the symphonic arrow’s damage that round in place of its own saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the damage proves to be higher. If a creature within area of effect is already under the effects of a noninstantaneous sonic or language-dependant magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it remains within the area, but it must use the symphonic arrow’s damage result for the save. This ability has no effect against effects that don’t allow saves.

Ex-Songbows

A songbow who willingly changes alignment or who ceases the worship of Naiaral immediately loses all benefits of this class. In addition, any arrow fired within 120 feet of the character swerves to strike her instead, as if the attack was initially targeting her instead of its actual target. She regains her abilities and advancement potential if she atones for her actions (see the atonement spell on page 201 of the Player’s Handbook).
