Doll Mage

Doll mages are arcane spellcasters who have focused their arcane talents towards the animation of dolls. Though often laughed at by serious arcane devotees, a doll mage’s full power is formidable. Possessing an army of utterly devoted, easily overlooked minions, doll mages are often able to infiltrate homes and fortresses which would repel traditional arcanists. After all, what guard would honestly consider that the princess’s new doll would be the assassin that slays his king later that night?

Doll mages tend to be either exceedingly cute, or very disturbed individuals. Her dolls may be porcelain works of art, or bloodstained, tattered things nearly falling apart at the seems. The art of doll magic has spread to nearly every culture, with each one adding its own twists and takes. The only constant among doll mages is the fact that, despite appearances, each one is a deadly opponent.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Doll Mage prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A doll mage gains no new weapon or armor proficiency.

Spellcasting: A doll mage continues training with magic. Thus, at every level, the character gains new spells per day and spells known as if she had also gained a level in whatever arcane spellcasting class she belonged to prior to adding this prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that level would have gained (improved familiar abilities, metamagic or item creation feats, etc).

Doll Magic (Su): A doll mage is able to animate dolls to serve her and carry out her wishes. She may animate a single tiny doll as a standard action which provokes attacks of opportunity. An animated doll is treated as a tiny animated object, but also possess a small fragment of the doll mage’s soul, granting it a distinct personality and intelligence. The doll is assumed to possess Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores of 6, but must resort to pantomime or written messages to relay its thoughts to others. These ability scores increase by 1 at 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th levels. A doll mage’s dolls are considered to be fanatically loyal to her, and obey even the most self destructive orders she gives them. A doll mage may have a number of dolls no greater than twice her class level animated at one time. Should she choose to animate a new doll, she must select one of her currently animated dolls to fall inert.

Repair Doll (Ex): A doll mage is adept at repairing damage to dolls. With appropriate materials (such as a needle and thread for cloth dolls, or scraps of leather and binding for leather dolls), the doll mage is able to take a full-round action to heal a doll for 1 hit point of damage. Use of this ability provokes attacks of opportunity.

Share Spells (Su): Beginning at 2nd level, the doll mage can choose to have any spell she casts on herself affect any number of her animated dolls as well, provided that the dolls to be affected are within 5 feet of her at the time of casting. If the spell effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting her dolls if they move further than 5 feet away and will not affect the dolls again, even if they return to the doll mage before the duration expires. Additionally, the doll mage may cast a spell with a target of “You” on all dolls within 5 feet of her instead of on herself. A doll mage and her dolls may share spells even if such spells would normally fail to affect a creature with the Construct type.

Mage Doll (Su): At 3rd level, the doll mage is able to command one of her animated dolls to perform the somatic components of a spell as she casts it, essentially transforming the spell into a Still Spell. The doll performing the somatic components must be able to move freely, and must be remain within 5 feet of the doll mage for the entirety of the spell’s casting time. This does not modify the spell level of any spell used in conjunction with this ability.

At 6th level, the doll mage may instead choose to have one of her animated dolls perform the somatic components of a spell in tandem with her own gestures, thus increasing the effects of the cast spell. The doll assisting the doll mage must be able to move freely, and must be remain within 5 feet of the doll mage for the entirety of the spell’s casting time. The doll mage may then apply the Empower Spell feat to the cast spell, at no increase to the spell’s normal spell level.

At 9th level, the doll mage’s animated dolls grow more adept at mimicking her gestures, allowing her to apply the Twin Spell feat to a spell as she casts it, at no increase of spell level. The doll assisting the doll mage must be able to move freely, and must be remain within 5 feet of the doll mage for the entirety of the spell’s casting time.

Shift Concentration (Su): A doll mage of 4th level or higher is able to shift the concentration of a spell she is concentrating on to one of her dolls, freeing her mind for further casting. As a move action, the doll mage may choose one of her animated dolls within 5 feet of her. That doll then assumes control of the spell the doll mage was concentrating upon, but must take a full-round action each round to maintain the concentration. The doll may move away from the doll mage after assuming concentration of a spell, but may not move out of the spell’s range without ending the spell’s effect, as normal.

Store Spells (Su): By 5th level, the link between a doll mage and her creations has grown so strong as to allow her to store spells within their bodies. Storing a spell within an animated doll is a full-round action, and erases the spell from the doll mage’s memory, just as if it had been cast. The process of transferring arcane power in this manner is taxing, and requires an expenditure of experience points equal to the spell level multiplied by its caster level. Storing a spell in this manner provokes attacks of opportunity. A doll may hold a single spell, whose level can be no greater than the doll mage’s class level.

To retrieve a spell, the doll mage must be in physical contact with the doll. She may then cast the spell as if reading it from a scroll. Alternatively, the doll itself may choose to cast the spell stored within it, but doing so is a full-round action (unless the spell has a casting time longer than a full-round action, in which case the doll uses the spell’s normal casting time). If the spell has a verbal component, the doll may ignore that particular component, as if the spell were modified with the Silent Spell feat. Should a doll with a stored spell be destroyed, the spell is lost.

Sacrificial Doll (Su): A 7th level doll mage is able to shunt damage she receives to a nearby doll, sacrificing it to preserve her own life. Whenever the doll mage is subjected to an attack that would normally reduce her hit point total to less than 0, she may choose to shunt a portion of the damage to any of her dolls within 5 feet of her. The damage dealt to the doll mage is halved (rounded down), and the selected doll takes the remaining half of the damage (rounded up). Should the doll possess damage reduction or hardness, the damage dealt to it is reduced appropriately. The doll mage may use this ability any number of times per day, so long as there is an animated doll within 5 feet of her when she suffers damage from the attack.

Possess Doll (Su): Upon reaching 8th level, the doll mage discovers a way to possess her creations, allowing her to control their bodies as if they were her own. This ability is similar to a magic jar spell, though it only affects her dolls. As a full-round action, the doll mage may transfer her soul to the body of any tiny doll within 50 feet of her. This doll need not be one animated by the doll mage, though she may select such an animated doll if she so desires. So far as anyone can tell, her original body appears to be dead.

While possessing a doll, the doll mage uses the doll’s Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores, hit points, natural abilities, and automatic abilities. She retains her own Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores, level, class, base attack bonus, base save bonuses, alignment, and mental abilities. The doll mage may cast spells as normal, but, as dolls do not possess the ability to speak, she becomes unable to cast spells with verbal components. Should the doll have a spell stored within it (as per the doll mage’s store spells ability), the doll mage may cast this single spell as if it were modified with the Silent Spell feat.

If the doll mage’s body is slain, the doll becomes her new body. Should her doll body be slain, her soul immediately returns to her normal body. The doll mage may use this ability any number of times per day.

Living Doll (Su): A doll mage who has reached 10th level may prepare a special doll resembling her natural body, preparing it to house her soul once she dies. Creating a doll of this type requires materials and reagents costing 1,000 gp, and requires one full week of dedicated work. The doll may cost more if it is to be crafted from a special material, such as darkwood; calculate the cost for an appropriately-sized suit of full plate mail crafted from the material in question, then double it. This is the cost of a doll crafted from that material. Should the doll mage be slain any time after the completion of this doll, her soul possesses the body of the doll, which becomes her new body.

After possessing the doll, the doll mage’s type changes to Construct, granting her a number of new abilities. She loses her Constitution score, but gains a natural armor bonus equal to the hardness of the material her new body is crafted from (she does not gain the hardness ability). In addition, if the armor would grant any special abilities to a character wearing full plate mail crafted from that material (such as damage reduction from adamantine), the doll mage gains that ability as well. She gains low-light vision, darkvision to a range of 60 feet, and a natural slam attack dealing 1d6 points of damage, plus her Strength modifier. Any racial abilities dependent upon the doll mage’s physical construction, such as a dwarf’s stability ability, may be lost or retained as appropriate, at the DM’s discretion.

The doll mage gains immunity to ability damage and drain, poison, sleep effects, paralysis, disease, nausea, fatigue, exhaustion, effects that cause the sickened condition, negative energy, and energy drain. She gains immune to stunning and nonlethal damage, as well as necromancy effects. The doll mage can no longer heal damage normally through resting, though she may use her repair doll ability to heal herself (possibly a costly venture, if her new body is crafted from a rare material). The repair damage and inflict damage arcane spell lines are also effective at healing a doll mage’s new body.

Depending upon the physical construction of a doll mage’s body, she may be vulnerable to certain spells and effects that normally don’t affect living creatures. A doll mage crafted of metal is considered to be either a ferrous creature or wearing metal armor for the purpose of spells and effects that affect metal, while one crafted of wood is considered to be a wooden creature for the purpose of spells that affect wood.

A doll mage reduced to 0 hit points is disabled, just like a living creature. When her hit points are less than 0 and greater than -10, she is inert. The doll mage is unconscious and helpless, and cannot perform any actions. However, she is considered to be stable, and does not lose hit points each round due to bleeding.
