Many people are quite happy using a computer with no communications capabilities. Perhaps all you neeed a micro computer for is to do word proccessing or manipulate spreadsheets, for example. If so, there is no need to get involved with telephone, cable or radia connections. Quite often, however, people find that what they are really engaged in is research. The report you are writing on the word processor or the analysis you are doing with the spreadsheet has had to be assembled from facts you've researched. Facts have to come form somewhere. Perhaps they are most conveniently obtained from an online database connected by a communications line to your computer. Communications refers to the electronic transfer of data. Digital communications means that data is transmitted as O's and 1's. Analog communications includes nondigital forms of voice and video. |
