In the late 1980’s, a division of the government studying paranormal activity had gone across the country collecting individuals that showed any signs of psychic ability. Many were children, who had no control over their talents and had done things to scare other people. Some of them could move things with their minds, others started fires or caused strange things to happen. Ostracized by their communities, their families had willingly given them up for monetary compensation. Those that were almost adults usually went to a facility in Virginia, but the younger children were taken to the Sawtooth Complex.

They were raised in the Kinetics Tower, and learned to control their abilities and to hone their powers. They were subjected to numerous tests, and were encouraged to perform frequently. What they didn’t know was that one of the projects was creating ways to protect against psychic attacks. They created artificial psychic shielding and other things to prevent the psychics from causing any damage or harm.

As these children grew up, they were separated into groups according to their skills. When they were older, some of them were put together in breeding pairs, to see which skills were passed on. Others were artificially inseminated with genetically engineered and fertilized eggs to reproduce. Many times, it did not work, the offspring did not survive more than a few months at most.

In the Genetics Tower, the scientists there were adding DNA to the eggs taken from the females of the psychic group of kinetics. They had taken the DNA from different animals and plants and added it in to see what kinds of qualities could be passed on. This was extremely dangerous, and as such was kept as a need to know security clearance.

The geneticists finally had a breakthrough and there were finally viable infants from the genetically modified eggs. The ones with the sea creature DNA seemed to be the strongest, so those were the ones implanted. Sixty-two children were born within a few month span. Allowed to stay with their mothers in the Kinetics Tower, they spent the first months of their lives in the nursery there. They were taken from their mothers at the age of eighteen months and taken to the Genetics Tower.

The children were separated into two groups of fifteen and two groups of sixteen. As they grew, they were taught basic skills. What they were not taught was about the outside world. They were kept totally in the dark that there was a whole different place above the rock cavern that rose above their subterranean home. When they were younger, they were allowed to see the towers, and the agricultural buildings, but after one child had caused a serious incident, they had been confined to the insides of the towers.

One of the other groups had a boy that had pyrokinesis and he had lost control when it was time to leave the plant growing area. He had caused a terrible fire that destroyed nearly an acre of test plants. The plants had been the result of years of planned reproduction and all of it had been consumed in the flames. He had been the first of us to disappear. The rest of the children were not allowed to discuss his leaving, and they were ordered to remove him from their memories, as if he had never existed.

Each of the groups were treated differently than the others. One group was allowed to form emotional bonds with the others in their group, another was prevented from bonding with anyone. A third group was kept unaware that there were any other people in the facility other than their group and the last had no contact with any other humans. It was a terrible way to grow up as a child.

More children had been born to the psychics, many of whom had no discernible talents. These children were kept in the agricultural facility, basically bred and trained to be the gardeners and farmers. Nearly all of the food used by the Complex was grown here, and prepared by those who had been found talentless. Many of them had been given jobs to do, either in the food preparation and janitorial departments. Others that were deemed deficient were often taken to the test subject laboratory.<> The women psychics were forced to give birth once every year for a period of ten years. If their strength remained after all the births, they would be kept for other forms of testing. After that, no one knew what had happened to them. Since there was a seemingly endless supply of psychics in a population of over three hundred million in this country alone, there were always new breeding subjects.
