Chapter Fifteen.

Donna Owens woke up on her bed completely nude. Her legs were sticky and she was sore. She sat up in the bed and looked down. There was blood drying on her thighs and wet up higher. She felt a rush of fluid come from her. Confused and with her head was aching, she got up and went into the bathroom.

She sat down on the toilet and winced as her genitals began to sting. Slowly, memories started coming back to her. A man had hit her and dragged her into the house. Donna started going into shock. She looked into the bathroom mirror and was surprised to see the bruises on her face. She stumbled down the hall, staggering against the wall as she reached for the phone.

She dialed the emergency number and requested the police through heavy sobs. After giving her address, the operator kept her on the line until the officers arrived. Fifteen minutes later there was a knock on the door.

Pulling on a robe, Donna looked out through the peephole before letting them in. An ambulance pulled up in front to the house and the technicians came into the house. She pointed toward her bedroom when one of the officers asked here where the attack occurred.

Asked if she was able to walk, she nodded and was helped up. From the corner of her eye, she saw her handbag on the end table and grabbed it, holding it tightly against her chest. The EMT helped her to the ambulance and she was laid down on the gurney. Several more police cars had arrived and there were people going into the house. The back door was closed and the ambulance pulled away to take to the hospital. They had already explained that they would need to do a rape kit and it had to be done at the hospital. The voices became a low buzzing noise as she slipped out of consciousness.

Donna woke up in the emergency room, in a partition behind a curtain. She could hear the doctors and nurses talking on the other side of the material. Staring at the ceiling, she tried to remember more of what had happened. Slowly, it was coming back to her, hearing the car door slam, and dropping her keys. It was like flashes of a dream, her mind was keeping it disjointed. He was wearing a mask or something, or his pace was painted. She remembered black lines crossing out his face.

The curtain was pushed aside and a woman in a pale green medical uniform walked up to the bed. Her nametag had just her last name on it, Henderson. Donna wondered if she was a doctor or just a nurse. The woman held a clipboard and began asking Donna the basic questions, getting her name and address. The harder questions came next, did she know why she was here, what had happened and what she might remember. She answered as well as she could, her mind was still a bit muddled.

"Are you a doctor or a nurse?" Donna asked, lifting herself up from the table and slightly slurring the words. "I am a doctor, Ms. Owens, my name is Doctor Henderson," she replied. "Okay, then," Donna said and relaxed back on the exam table.

The woman then explained that they were going to do a pelvic exam and rape kit on her. A female officer came in with a box and set it on a stand next to the bed. The doctor opened it and took a small fine-toothed comb from the box.

Donna's legs were lifted into the stirrups. Her robe fell open and the doctor pulled out a sheet from a drawer underneath the table. Placing it across her abdomen, the doctor proceeded with the exam. She drew the comb across Donna's pubic area and placed it into an envelope that the officer held out for her. Next came the swabbing samples and washing.

Afterwards, they let her take a shower and gave her an exam robe to wear until she could get someone to bring her some clothes. She wasn't sure whom to call. She didn't want to talk to Eric right now; she didn't think it was appropriate to call her therapist. There really wasn't anyone she wanted to know about this right now.

Then she remembered Dana. She had actually been closer to Rachel who had been Dana's roommate, but after the murder they had become a little closer, going out for drinks a few times. In her purse she had her planner, she was sure she had written Dana's cell phone down in it someplace. She flipped through the pages, looking for it. At the back of the notepad, she found the number. She looked up at the clock and saw that it was nearly noon. She got up and walked over the phone that the nurse had told her she could use.

Dana answered her cell phone on the first ring. At first she sounded disappointed, but quickly explained she was waiting for an important call. When she heard what happened, she was immediately sympathetic, and agreed to help with whatever she could. The police were probably still at her house, Donna explained, if she could just grab some clothes for her and bring them to the hospital, she would be eternally grateful.

"Absolutely," Dana told her and got the directions to the house. She would go right now and be at the hospital as soon as she possibly could. Donna thanked her and hung up the phone. Then she covered her face with her hands and started to cry.
