The Archangel Michael The belief in the Archangel MIchael, stands forth in many religions. As christianty, catholic, islamic, jewish and so on, as well as he is mentioned also besides in the Bible, the Koran,Talmud, and The Dead Sea Scrolls. There are also many books on Michael, poems, sites. There are also many who channel Michael, are say they can. Not only to recieve messages for their own well being, but the world, humanity. To better ourselves,to care for the world,to become close to God, to prepare ourselves for life as well as afterlife. There are many meditations as well as prayers wrote for Michael, asking him for guidence, protection. Im not going to go to much into others views. As i said there is just so much stuff on Michael, so many different views. All that is wrote here i got from different books, so the information varies. There are many different descriptions of Michael and names for him, or as i mean what people refer to him as. The most common one, is the meaning of his name which is -who is like God-. There are references also in the bible, through different parts or books that refer to Michael, as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls. An example: MIchaels name fits perfectly with- "The Angel who had Gods name in him"(exo.23:21). Michael is the one who will rise up for his brethern and appear at the time of trouble at the end of this age with the Book Of Life(Dan 12:1-3) and with the scales weigh our deeds and actions as head of judgement, also he must be the one called son in John 5:22. The Archangel Michael, is the called the Angel of night in the Koran. Saint Basil called him the "Prince of all Angels". Saint Thomas Aquinas referred to Michael as the leader of the lowest choir of heavenly spirits. Islamic texts refer to Michael(Mika'il) as a mediator who will "implore the pardon of allah"(God) and seek mercy for sinners. Michael is also called the "leader of the sons of light" and "defender of paridise". As for ideas on how to say his name, in Rudolf stieners book - The Archangel Michael- he points out that every archangels name ends in EL, meaning God, as we pronounce the other ARchangels names with the El at the end, we tend to roll over Michaels EL, so he suggests his name should be pronounced either Mi-ch-a-EL or Micha-EL, or forms of. Ive also read that two secret names for Michael were Sabbathiel and KImos, but these ideas came from a book of someone who considered Him to be her guardian angel. Appearences of Michael are also a very common thing. Whether it is through visualization, or dreams, or sometimes in some stories they say he takes on form. There has also been many accounts where Michael has came to the assistance of those in need. Or helped lead people to healing waters, caves and so on.Some stories include: Gregory the Great invoked Michaels assistance in 390 to end a terrible plague that had been decinating the poopulation. It is said that Michael touched the steeple of the church and the plague was removed. Saint Michael appeared to the Bishop Saint Lawerence, on may 8, 493, to inform him that the ground under a cave on mount gargano(in naples) was consecreated by Angels. It was found that a liquid substance was dripping from the ceiling, which all who touched it was quickly healed of their maladies. In Christian religon beliefs as well as many others, Michael is described as judging the souls after they have passed over. Michael weighs the souls of men and women determing their fates. Then he leads the saved to eternal bliss and the ones whos sins are veniel rather then mortal to purgatory, until the time of final judgement. In this postion Michael is shown holding scales. In the Catholic religon as well as others, Michael is considered a Saint. But each religion idea of him in this postion varies. As in the catholic form he is the patron of policemen. As early as 1950, pope pius XII, declared Michael the offical Saint over all policemen. In eygpt Michael is the patron of the nile and his feast day is celebrated each year on the day the river rises. His feast day on the catholic view is celebrated each year on sept. 29th. Michael is also considered to be the patron saint of germany, brittany, cornwall, papua, new guinea, and of marines and paratroopers. In Islamic Angelology, Michael is the Islamic Angel of food and knowledge. And dwells in the seventh moslem heaven. The book of enoch calls Michael "the merciful, the patient, the holy" and says that he presides over human virtues and commands all nations. Michael is an Angel of repentence, rightousness, mercy and sanctification. Ideas on Michael through different cultures and religions- Every culture or every orgin, nationality of people, have their own ideas, their own stories of how the world was created and what took place afterwards and so forth. If we compare them all, we can see how closely related, at least the stories of creation, the wars that took place after and so on are to each other. Maybe they have given the Archangels, angels different names or postions or made them into gods or heros, but they only differ in comparison vaguely. There are many stories, ideas that compare to the christian, jewish and catholic ideas of Michael. AS there are also stories of heros and so on that take on Michaels form or compare to him. There are so many, that its hard to write them all, but here are a few, as also references to where you can learn more, if you so choose. Sumerian/Babylonian- The story of how the god marduk conquered the dragon tiamet. Taken from the Emuna Elish. In this story, marduk is described as having four eyes and four ears so he could see and here everything. In my research on religion, i have found that some described MIchael as having many eyes and so forth, so he could see everything. The refrences to cheak on this would be anthing on sumerian or babyloian myths and history. Ancient India- Taken from the Rig Veda. Indra defeats the dragon Vritra. Indra is described as carring a thunderbolt as a weapon. Which he used to destroy demons and also to bring down he dragon, to release the seven rivers that make the earth fertile. Here and also the story above, gives us the example of Michael defeating satan. Though the reasons in both of these stories are different. Also see hindu myths, the rig veda and ramayana for references. Ancient Eygpt- Osiris, the eygptian god of the underworld. He weighs the souls(or hearts) of the dead, those whose heatrs weigh less then a feather, are considered as pure or as having done great deeds in life. And they are resurected to spend eternity in the kingdom, as if on earth. Those with heavier hearts are to stay dead and not seek or recieve resurrection in the kingdom. Osiris's brother set represents darkness in eygptian mythology. Here we have the christian and jewish idea of Michael weighing the souls after they've passed over. See eygptian book of the dead or eygptian myths for further references.
