Well I never actually thought there'd ever be another Doom Metal band which moves me quite the way My Dying Bride and certain Anathema songs do....however this tribute is to a Danish band called Saturnus.
Saturnus, as many Death/Doom bands around them were heavily influenced by My Dying Bride - especially in their Turn Loose the Swans and The Angel and the Dark River era. However, Saturnus makes their own mark on the Doom Metal landscape with true power and sadness.
I first heard their music back in 1997 with their debut album Paradise Belongs to You. This album highlights just what Death/Doom Metal is all about - heavy guitars, deep grunted vocals combined with whispers and clean vocal lines. This is a very melancholic and pessemistic album, and makes the listener feel drained in the process. Amazing melancholic doom...
With the release of their 2nd album in 1998 For the Loveless Lonely Nights, the atmosphere makes you feel more. I believe that Track #2 'For Your Demons' is the best song on it. It stirs the emotions that many of us have perhaps felt sometime, and reminds us of those emotional scars that might still remain. *you'll find the lyrics to this song on my the lyrics page also*
Shortly after their 2000 album Martyre 3 of the band members left to form other bands - 'The Loveless' and 'Of the Wand and the Moon', both of which are good. Unfortunately too, 'Martyre' also showed a slight softening in their style, favouring a more mellow approach. Still a worthy album in any case and I would totally recommend this band to any Doom Metal fan.
