WITH THIS RING I THEE WED

MORNING.............by Coralynn

Saturday, June 28th dawns sunny and warm. As Bess and Marthy wake up in Marthy's room at the big house, they hear someone talking in the kitchen, so they throw on their robes and peek out. It's William and John reading their five morning newspapers.
The two women go into the kitchen and smile a good morning to them. Filling their coffee cups, they then go back into the bedroom.
"I love your room here, Marthy. So much cozier than the apartment over on Elmwood!" Bess comments.
"You know, Bess, since there are two beds in here and a huge closet, you could live here, too. It's so much fun living with these interesting people! Over on Elmwood all we have are the guys across the hall. I think Jack is getting ready to move back here, too," she adds wistfully.
"You really like Jack, don't you?" Bess asks.
"Jack is a great guy. I didn't get to know him very well back at Court because he worked in the stables and I did kitchen work, so our paths rarely crossed, but the few times they did, I ..."
"I know, you felt a tingle!" Bess kids her, "If both of you lived here you'd have a better chance with him, right?"
"True. But......right now we have to think about getting ready for the wedding. Who's doing your hair and makeup? Marilyn? I think she said she'd help both of us. There's a lady who knows how to look her best. I could take lessons from her. "
"I agree. I want to transform into a real Lady, an elegant lady. Back at Court I hardly got to wear anything but that uniform and my hair! What a rats-nest it was! Nobody thought a serving wench worth much. I shudder to think what life would have been like had I not come into the 21st century!"
"ME TOO!" Bess takes another sip of coffee, "I mean.......tradition has it that I killed myself in an effort to warn Rafe that the redcoats were coming. How stupid is that?!"
Their laughter is interruped by Marilyn poking her head into the room, "This is the day, ladies! You get to be Cinderella at the ball!"
"You're a bridesmaid, aren't you, Marilyn?"
"I am, and I get to wear a great looking gown, but there's no reason both of you can't dress elegantly as well. Beth made some dresses for you that will knock everyone's eyes out! Wait here, I'll go get them!"

She soon returns with the dresses and hands them to Bess and Marthy, who hold them up to themselves and stand by the full length mirror.
"These are gorgeous!" both exclaim.
"Just like Cinderella!"
Marilyn winks at Marthy, "Wait till Jack sees you in that! And, I have great plans for your hair, both of you. Let's pile it up a little in back and let the curls fall forward just here, and here, and here....." she starts rearranging Marthy's curly hair.

MEANWHILE, across town, Slim is sitting on his bed at the Motel 6, room 12, looking around for the socks he threw on the floor the night before. He gets down on the floor and fans his hands out under the bed and sure enough, there's one sock, now where in hell is the other one?
Still no money in his Clark Gable account at the Wells Fargo Bank.
"Do I have to mail that joker a copy of the unfinalized divorce? I have to do something pretty darned fast. The money I make at the fitness center isn't going to bring me up in the world. I need a car! I need one bad!

He dresses and walks outdoors. Hmmmmm, nice day, warm, sunny, not too humid, at least not yet.
He sits on the plastic chair outside his motel room door and drinks some coffee. Wonder if Bess will be at the fitness center today. Hope so. She's very attractive, very sweet, I don't think my pickup lines would work on her. Rose thought they were funny. Bess wouldn't. Don't know how I know that, but I do. Besides, I want to go slow and easy and make a good impression. HEY! What's that going down the road out there? A wrecker, towing what looks like my old red Ford Falcon!
Slim walks closer to the highway and gets a good look as the wrecker slowly goes by towing a red Falcon.
"That's my car!" he yells and waves his arms at the tow-truck driver, who simply waves back, smiles, and proceeds on to his destination.
Slim sits back down with a thump.
"Blast that Wanda Sue! She must have wrecked my car, and after all the work I did on it, fixing it up so it looked like a million bucks and ran like a dream........now, it's junkyard bound."
He runs his left hand through his disheveled hair and groans, "I gotta put the bite on Montgomery again. Gotta get me a car!!"

OVER AT THE CASTLE, Daniel is pacing in his room.
Only two days and I have to live somewhere else. Where? I wonder if that cool guy Rafe has room in his apartment? He and I have a lot in common, just what I'm not sure, but I think we do. Maybe I could get drunk with him every night, he looks like the type who would go for that. I need to drive over and talk to him, but my Jeep has two flat tires and I don't have time to fix them now. Maybe later, but I want to talk with Rafe now! He looks out and sees Henry's car in the drive. I could borrow that and be back here before Henry is out of bed!
He stealthily leaves the castle, grabs Henry's car keys on his way out, and gets in the car, hoping it won't make enough noise to waken anyone when he turns on the ignition.
Good. Nice quiet engine. He looks behind him as he begins backing up, then, as he again looks forward, Henry is keeping pace with the car all the way down the driveway with a furious expression. Oh-oh! Daniel slows as Henry comes alongside and yells in the car window, "Just what do you think you're doing, Daniel?"
"I'll have your car back in 20 minutes. I have to find a new place to live, remember?"
"You're going to find a new place in 20 minutes? That's absurd! Now, get out of my car right this minute!"
Daniel considers doing so, for about 5 seconds, then decides against it and quickly backs the rest of the way out and heads on down the street as fast as possible. He can see Henry get smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror.
"This had better work, because there's no way they'll let me stay in castle, especially not now that I've borrowed Henry's car. He did have to wake up, didn't he? Well, Henry, I won't have to put up with your overbearing ways any longer. Rafe will be glad to take me in...........I hope."

He slides the car up in front of the house on Elmwood and cuts the engine. Looking toward the house he sees no signs of life. Maybe those guys are still asleep. I'd better go check it out.
He rings the doorbell over and over before Jack comes out and asks what he wants.
"Wanna see Rafe!" is all Daniel tells him.
Jack doesn't look any too pleased, but allows Daniel to come inside.
"Rafe sleeps late, so you may have a long wait," Jack tells him abruptly, not making any friendly overtures or even offering him a cup of coffee.
Daniel can smell the coffee brewing, too, and he's longing for some. He finally goes to the kitchen, grabs a mug and pours it for himself.
Jack goes back into his bedroom and leaves Daniel by himself. Now there has to be a way to wake Rafe up, Daniel thinks, "I know, I'll turn on the TV and crank up the sound as high as it'll go."
He does this.
Jack puts his head out of his bedroom and scrowls at him.
Daniel pretends not to notice. The program on the TV is just people talking, so Daniel decides he'd better get another channel, one where the sound is louder, like maybe MTV. He goes to that channel and soon the house is all but rocking off it's foundation from the decibel level.
He hears a sound coming from Rafe's room. Sounds like someone just harpooned a wild animal. Sure enough, Rafe comes thundering out of his room making unintelligible noises, quiet unhuman.

When Rafe sees Daniel he goes straight to the TV and turns it off.
"What do you want, Daniel? It's the middle of the night! Look! It's 9am. Are you daft?"
"Sorry, Rafe, but I had to talk to you. Remember how much fun we had the other night at the Castle when all us guys got together?"
Rafe nods his head without enthusiasm.
"I thought you and I could buddy up, maybe I could even move in here."
Rafe squints up his eyes and snorts, "Jack lives here, for now."
"When do you think Jack will move back to the big house?"
Rafe clears his throat, making a stomach-turning noise while doing so, and bangs on Jack's bedroom door.
"Yes, what is it?" Jack sticks his head out.
"How much longer are you going to be living here?" Rafe asks rudely.
"I'd leave this minute if you could find another flat mate," Jack says angrily, "But since you can't, I have to keep you from harming yourself or others, that's the long and the short of it."
"Ahhhhh, then, if Daniel moves in, you'll move out?" Rafe is beginning to get the picture. Jack disapproves of Rafe's behavior but Daniel doesn't. A change would be to his advantage.
"YES!" Jack says as he firmly closes the door again.
Rafe goes back to Daniel and smiles wickedly, "Looks like you have a place to stay, buddy!" he slaps Daniel on the back, which, considering Rafe's size and strength, all but sends Daniel flying across the room.
"Wonderful! I'll be over with my things tomorrow morning!" Daniel tells him as he staggers to regain his footing, then leaves to get the car back to the Castle before Henry does something really stupid like call the Cops.

BACK at the Motel 6:
Slim looks at his watch. 9:30 a.m. Heck, the bank is open till noon! Better get busy on my 'put the bite on Montgomery' project. I need a car soon so I can take Bess out on a proper date. Yeah!
He goes back into the motel room and dials up the Montgomery ranch. It rings several times. Slim is hoping Billy Bob picks up, not his snooty mother. The phone is picked up and a snarling voice asks, "Yes?"

"Now, is that any way to address your pal, Clark? I don't think so, buddy. The Wells Fargo Bank is open till noon today. Put a hundred thou in Clark Gable's account or I'm sending the evidence of your bigamy to the papers."
There is a moment of silence on the other end of the line. Hmmm, this could be a good sign. Maybe that rich snob is thinking it over, could it be?
"ALRIGHT! But that's IT!" the voice says just before the phone is slammed down. Slim holds his phone away from his ear......that hurt!....but it looks like this Slim Jim is going to be rich by noon! Hot diggity-dog!!!

HOT, HOT, NOT!........by Terri

The next morning, Billy Bob reached over to wrap his arms around his wife and came up empty-handed. He raised his head and looked at the pillow. Hell, she never did come to bed. Guess she spent the night in the baby's room.

He got dressed and went downstairs. Rosamond had Julie in the swing and was making coffee. Billy Bob got a sheepish look on his face, put his arms around Rose and tried to kiss her goodmorning. She shrugged him off and said, "Coffee's ready if you want some."
He poured a cup. "This afternoon we can go over and jump the car. What time do we have to be at the wedding?"
Rose said, "I have to be there at 6:15. YOU can come whenever."
Billy Bob sat down and looked at her. "I'll drive you. That way we can go together."
Rose said, "Whatever."
Billy Bob picked up his hat, opened the door and said, "Yes. Whatever."

Later that morning Billy Bob and Rose headed for the house on Winding Willow. Rose thought, now if only El did what I asked of her. She bit her lip.
They pulled into the drive. Rose got out and said, "I'll tell whoever answers the door that I will meet them at the chapel, ready to go."
She rang the bell. Eleanor answered, "Rose! Why so formal, just walk in as always!"
She looked out and saw Billy Bob attaching jumper cables to the Miata. "Oh! OK! Are you alright?"
Rose said, "Not really. I'll meet you at the chapel. Here's the emerald necklace, do you have the sapphire one to switch with?" El said, "Sure! Come on in!" Rose said, "No, I'll wait here."
Eleanor returned with a jewelry case. "Here, honey. Is someone doing your hair?"
"Juanita is. She's really good. I'll see you all at the chapel. Kiss Bethie for me!"
"Will do," and closed the door.
John was passing by. "Who was at the door?"
Eleanor said, "Rosamond. She looks pretty well bummed out. What's going on? She had me turn her lights on to run her battery down."
John looked out the window, but making sure he was unnoticed. "We got busted again from Officer Dudley Dooright."
Eleanor threw her hands up. "Making out at lover's lane again? For Pete's sake, John, if you can't keep your hands off each other, the Happy Hour motel rents by the hour!"
John said, "It wasn't a planned thing, El. Things...just kind of turned out that way. I swear, if those windows didn't fog up, I would have seen him. Somehow I have to get Rosamond's shoes to her. They, uh, got left in the car."
El said, "I give up. Play with fire. Get burned. Just don't get yourself killed in the meantime."
John watched as Montgomery got the Miata to roar to life. Rose got in the car, and both of them burned out of the driveway.
John smiled a self-satisfied smile. "Looks like it's a hot time at the old Ranch--NOT!"

NOON.........by Coralynn

William enters the kitchen from the back yard where his flower garden and bushes are. He yells out for anyone within ear-shot to hear, "What happened to my rose bushes? Two of them are flattened! Who's sabotaging me this time?"
Eleanor laughs, "I think Daniel landed on them when he jumped off the roof, William, remember the panty raid?"
William sits and scowls, "I thought that was a stupid idea when I heard it. Now I have two rosebushes with damaged, yea destroyed, flowers. I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth it. I import the finest roses from England in honor of my original homeland. I tend them carefully, plant them just right, fertilize and water them with great attention, and what happens time after time?"

John laughs, "Well, Daniel will be moving out of the Castle tomorrow. Have no idea where he'll go, but then, do we care?"
Jack has spent the night at the big house and is helping Bess toss a salad. He glances over at William and commiserates: "I love flowers too, William, so if you need an extra hand with your garden, I'm willing to help."
"Ahhhhh, you are such a fine lad," William smiles at him, "A gardener and a true scholar. Who ever would have thought?"
Jack places the salad on the table and sits in the chair beside William.
"Never would have known what I was capable of had I stayed in the 12th century!"
Marthy enters the kitchen looking very glamorous in her new hairdo and makeup. Jack stares at her.
"Is that you, Marthy? How glorious you look!"
She blushes and takes a seat, "You are too kind, sir!"
"I mean it! You look like a page out of one of those magazines!"
"Marilyn helped me. She's a genius, you know. She knows everything!"
William smiles and thinks, "not only that, but she has a mean upper cut."
Jack can't take his eyes off Marthy's face which is causing her to continue blushing. She is unused to this much attention, and, even though she sought it, she is having a hard time knowing just how to react.

"Did I hear my name mentioned?" Marilyn joins them, "How do you like the makeover I did on Marthy? Is she not beautiful? Elegant? Wait till you see her in the dress she's wearing to the wedding! Whew! Dynamite!"
"Will Bethia be joining us for lunch?" Marthy asks, hoping to get the conversation into a safe zone, away from how great she looks.
"Here she is now," John remarks as Bethia enters the kitchen, "How are preparations going?" he asks.
"We have a crew out at the Chapel in the Pines getting it readied," she answers, "The flowers are being arranged out there right about now, plus the food for the reception is going to arrive around 6. That place even has a kitchen. So all I have to do is get myself ready. If I put on my gown too soon it'll get crushed, so I'm holding off on that. In fact, I'm spending most of the day pacing around wondering what to do....."

William is feeling magnanimous, "No matter what, Beth, even if the chapel walls fall down, we won't care, because you and Roger are all that matter. We care not how elegant the flowers or how delicious the food. We want you to feel the love of your family around you at this time."
Everyone looks at William and smiles, then at Beth, who is behind his chair, bent over, hugging him as he sits. "You are more than family, you are more than friends, you are......."
"Wild and crazy?" Celeste finishes her sentence, which makes the group laugh.

MEANWHILE, across town, Slim has left the bank with a huge grin on his face and the hundred thou in his account. He put both Clark Gable and James Wesley Skaggs as co-owners of the account, and he is setting off as James Wesley Skaggs to spend a bit of it on a car he can use for dating. Hopefully.

He spies a Toyota dealership and hotfoots it over there. As he wanders around the used car lot, he sees a red SUV.
"YES!" he thinks, "RED! My favorite color for a car! And look at this puppy, only five years old! Price under thirteen thou. This is going to take less out of my stash than I'd thought! Good tires, and on this sticker it says it has all the stuff you need, like air conditioning, ohhhh yeah, this baby is it!"
A salesman approaches him smiling like a cheshire cat, which is what salesmen do while they extend their hand in bon'homme. "Like to take it out on a test drive?" the salesman suggests.
"Yes," Slim agrees, and in no time the salesman has fetched the keys from the office and off they go down the street, Slim driving.
He stops for a red light, then when it turns green peels out as fast as he can to see what the acceleration rate is. The salesman clutches the armrest, but doesn't object. Heck, this could be a sale that will put him in the top 10 salesmen of the month, an honor he has sought for several years, but never qualified for. So if this joker wants to go 100 mph, fine, let's just sell this thing!
Slim puts the vehicle through every kind of performance test he can think of, then drives back to the car lot, entering at 50 mph, then braking violently into the vehicle's original parking space, which throws the salesman back against the headrest.
He turns to Slim and says cheerfully, "What do we have to do to put you into this SUV today?"

THE WEDDING................by Coralynn

The sun is sending beams through the trees as the cars pull up to the Chapel in the Pines. The door is ajar and as William and Celeste and Luke walk into the chapel they are struck with the beauty of the flowers and the glowing candles on the altar.
In the bridesmaids room, Celeste finds Rose, Eleanor and Marilyn nervously doing last minute makeup repairs.
"My mascara is running," Marilyn complains, "here, just a dab and I think I'll have it fixed. I am so nervous!"
"You'd think you were the bride!" Celeste kids her as she straightens out the hem of her gown. "There! Now you are officially pronounced perfect!" Celeste smiles at the young women she has unofficially adopted as her own daughters. OK, so Eleanor isn't quite that young, still, Celeste feels motherly toward her as well.
Rose is flushed as she is tense because Billy Bob insisted on accompanying her to the wedding. If only he'd opted out, she thinks, this would be so much more enjoyable. But regardless, this is going to be a night to remember.
They can see the chapel from their room and soon Little Will is walking down the aisle with the rings affixed to a small satin pillow. At age 5, he is becoming quite a fine little gentleman, Rose thinks, and it's high time I started spending more time with him. I do love him so.
Celeste gives the signal for the bridesmaids to begin walking down the aisle.
Eleanor goes first and in her emerald green gown, walks in a stately manner toward the altar. The men are there already, and as she reaches her assigned place to stand, Jerry looks over and winks. She smiles back and feels warmth for this wonderful man who she is fortunate enough to know.
Marilyn walks toward the front of the chapel as she sees Eleanor take her place. She hopes her red gown isn't too garish for this wedding, but Beth herself OK'd it, so.....here goes, she thinks.
Rose then walks slowly toward the front of the chapel in her blue gown, feeling very special and stately. She looks neither to the right nor to the left at the pews, as she doesn't want this occasion marred by the sight of Billy Bob. She takes her assigned spot beside Marilyn, who looks at her and grins.
They are all excited at the prospect of Bethia appearing, which she does as the organ begins playing the Wedding March.
All the people in attendance stand as Bethia almost floats down the aisle in a wedding gown with such abundant lace in the skirt and the train that some of them gasp. William walks by her side, radiant. She is a vision, and Roger, standing at the alter, watching her, is overcome.
She stands by him and Rev Martha Owens begins the ceremony as the organ fades away.
She asks who giveth this bride to be married, at which William takes Bethia's hand and gently gives it to Roger, whispering "You take good care of my girl now, Roger." and steps back, his eyes wet.

The vows are partly traditional and partly written by Roger and Bethia. The chapel falls totally silent as they pledge their troth.
The effect of the flowers, the gowns and the aura of love surrounding Roger and Bethia cause Marthy and Bess to reach for their hankies. Ohhhh, this is so beautiful, Marthy thinks, I was never included in anything this important back at Court. I wonder what Jack thinks of it. Ohhhhhhh, he's looking at me, smiling, oh dear, now I'm blushing.
Billy Bob is sitting in a pew appreciating how well done this wedding is, but noticing John standing up there as an attendant. Didn't Rose say he was at Lake George, or was that some other time she said he was there. Well, he isn't there now and the sooner I can get Rose out of here the better.

Little Will holds up the pillow with the rings and as they are taken, stands to the side, relieved that he did it just as Grandma Celeste had told him.
Roger turns to Bethia and says, "With this ring I thee wed," sliding it onto her finger. He sees a tear in her eye but her radiant smile tells him she is OK. Then, as she says the same and slides his ring on, he breaks out into a grin, he just can't help it. How did a guy get so lucky?
The Minister tells him to kiss the bride, which he does after another few seconds of gazing into the most beautiful face he has ever seen. The kiss is tender and sweet. Roger can hear some of the people sighing, but then the organ blasts forth with the Recessional and they stride happily down the aisle toward the front of the Chapel.
They form a reception line and soon everyone is hugging and kissing and laughing and they hear Marilyn exulting, "Wahooooo!" They laugh at their feisty new friend.
Eleanor hugs Bethia and can't seem to stop. Tears fall.
Bethia holds Eleanor out a ways and chides, "Hey, girl, I'm just going to be living across the street! You're not losing me! You're gaining HIM she gestures toward Roger and they all laugh.
There isn't a dry eye in the place as they go to the hall for the reception.

THE RECEPTION...........by Coralynn

A very precious love Is what you are to me
A stairway to a star A night in Shangrila of ecstasy
Lanterns of gold Lanterns of blue Twinkle in the shadows While I dance with you
An echo in the wind Across the summer lake Is sayin' you should know
that lanterns lose their glow and hearts can break
So hold me close my darling then kiss me tenderly
And give your precious love Your very precious love to me

The orchestra plays and a the mellow voice of a singer sends these words out across the hall as Bethia and Roger dance the very first dance.
Marthy and Bess are all but swooning, "That is such a beautiful song!" Bess sighs.
"Wonder where she got it from.......could she have written it herself?" Marthy asks Marilyn, who is nearby.
"She and I watched an old movie, 'Marjorie Morningstar' back a month ago and this song was the main music. She fell in love with it."
"I can see why?" Bess and Marthy start to sway back and forth.
Jack notices and approaches them, "Marthy, would you do me the honor of the next dance?" he asks seriously.
Her hand flies to her mouth, and she stammers, "Do you know how to dance to this kind of music? We never heard such sounds back at Court."
Jack smiles, "You just sway and move your feet a little and everyone will think you know how! Don't worry, just follow me!"
They wait for the bridal couple to finish their special song, then other lovely songs are performed and many people go out on the dancefloor, Marthy and Jack among them.
Eleanor and Jerry are dancing near the young couple and smile their encouragement.
"This has to be one of the best eveings ever in the history of the world!" Eleanor exclaims.
"You've lived a great deal of that history, too, Eleanor, don't forget!" he kids her and she grins up at him. Ahhhhhh, what an assemblage......people from various centuries and countries all celebrating together.
Bethia and Roger join them as the song ends, "We're going to have our banquet in a few minutes," Bethia tells them, "Now you and Jerry and Rose and John, and Marilyn and Patrick are sitting with us at the head table, and smile while you eat because we have a friend of Roger's taking picture of everybody, and you never know just when you'll be snapped."
"Hmmmmm, that does sound like something we've had happen before!" Eleanor laughs, "except this time they'll end up in your photo album, not on the front page of several newspapers!"

William has already helped himself to a cookie from the dessert table and comes over, munching away. He claps Roger on the back and puts an arm around Bethia, exclaiming, "You two are the most outstanding married couple in this town, yea, in this state, in this country, in this....."
"You said it, big guy!" Eleanor finishes for him. "Are you giving the toast?"
"Yes, I am, but it's not easy. How many superlatives can I string together without sounding sappy? But, I want you two to know that you are loved by all, and you have my big old heart."
Celeste hears this and laughs, "You're an old softie, William the Conqueror; if they had known that back in the 11th Century, you would never have made it to your coronation alive....."
"Welllll," he sputters, "I was a mean machine back then, Celeste, but I've....I've.....mellowed." Everyone laughs heartily as they hear the call to the banquet table.
"Ahhhhhh, food!" Henry8 calls out, "Let the feasting begin!"

SWEET LOVE & WHISKEY SOURS......, by Terri

William led the way into the reception hall. The walls were a deep blue, almost a navy that went well with the navy of the night. Snow white table cloths covered the tables. White summer flowers were everywhere with touches of gold and silver. The bridal table was set on a dais. Roger and Bethia could not keep their eyes off each other. Roger held her hand and helped her up, careful not to trip over her train. Eleanor reached down and helped Beth rearrange her dress.

Jerry sat on one side of Roger as best man and Eleanor sat on the other side next to Bethia. John and Rose took their seats next to Eleanor, Marilyn and Patrick sat on Roger's side.
Little Will tugged on Rosamond's dress. "Mummy, where shall I sit?"
Rosamond reached down and hugged him. "Why don't you sit with Grandma Celeste and Poppy William?"
Little Will reached over and touched John's hand. "Uncle John, did I do alright?"
John ruffled his hair. "I'll bet the Knights of Arthur's Round Table could not have done a more efficient job presenting the Holy Grail, Will."
Little Will beamed from ear to ear and scampered off. He passed by Billy Bob and Daniel who were standing there, each with a whiskey, surveying the reception.
Billy Bob bent down to talk to Will. "Hey, Will, why don't you sit with me at the reception?"
Little Will gave him a solemn look. "But, Mr. Montgomery, Mummy and Uncle John told me to sit with Grandma Celeste!" Billy Bob said, "Will, isn't it about time you called me Daddy or Dad instead of 'Mr. Montgomery'?"
Will looked a little confused. "But I would have too many daddies and not enough mums to go with them." He got a confident look on his face and said, "And Uncle John PROMISED me HE was going to be my daddy!"
With that, he ran off to find Celeste.
Billy Bob looked at Daniel and raised one eyebrow. Daniel shrugged. "Hey, don't look at ME! John does NOT confide in me. But look up there. Now, what do you suppose goes on in their temperature-dreams? I certainly knows what goes on in mine. Another drink, Montgomery?" Daniel took the drink out of Billy Bob's hand and walked over to the bar, leaving Billy Bob to stare hard at the bridal table. John leaned over and whispered something to Rosamond. She tossed her head back and laughed. Daniel came back and put the drink in Billy Bob's hand. He hardly noticed, so intent was he on watching his wife. Daniel leaned against the marble pillar. "Yep, sure is alot of history there. A lot."

Jack led Marthy to a table. "Miss Marthy, may I have the honor of having dinner with you?" Marthy fanned her face, ready to faint. She blushed several shades of red. From beyond the pillar, Bess gave her a two thumbs up and a huge smile.
Jack pulled the chair out for Marthy. He smiled at her. "Miss Marthy, we sure have come a long way. I think it was a divine plan the day William walked into our lives."
He covered her hand with his and gave it a light squeeze. Marthy was so happy she could burst. Oh, yes, she thought. Tonight's the night! My first kiss and I will remember it always!

Dinner was an elegant affair. The menu consisted of lobster and filet mignon, assorted crudites and hord d'ouevres. William stood and tapped his glass with his knife. Everyone was quiet. William cleared his throat. He smiled through misted eyes.
"I see the love you both have in each other's eyes and as your love grows for one another, may you look back on this day and know this is the day when you loved each other the least. May your days be filled with sunshine and light, may your days be filled with moonbeams and starlight. To Bethia and Roger, a true love story!"

Everyone said, "To Bethia and Roger!" Daniel called out, "Don't cry, big guy! You've got a few more to marry off!"

Bethia stood up and beamed at everyone. "I would like to say something to my new mother-in-law. Since my parents are not here, I would like her to be the mother I am missing." She turned to Mrs. Bidwell and said, "You are the mother I received the day I wed your son. And I just want to thank you for the lovely way you raised him. You are his loving mother and I am now his devoted wife. You used to pat his head and now I hold his hand. You raised in love a special little boy and gave to me a man."

Everyone clapped. Mrs. Bidwell wiped tears from her eyes and gave Bethia a sincere hug and kiss.
Eleanor stood up and said, "To Bethia and Roger, a match made in heaven!" Jerry offered a similar toast. Rose looked at Bethia with tears in her eyes and then looked over at Billy Bob. She was remembering her own hasty wedding and felt guilt and remorse.

After the meal, the maid of honor and best man led off the dancing. The bridesmaids and ushers followed. Patrick and Marilyn seemed to hit it off, both of them liked a good time. Eleanor and Jerry snuggled next to each other in a clinch of affection and bonhommie. John held out his hand to Rosamond and she followed him on the dance floor. Billy Bob could feel his temper flash but Daniel put his hand on his shoulder. "Let it go for now, Billy Bob. Take care of it later. Let's do one thing for Bethia. Let's behave at least until she and Roger leave. Give them that. Bethia helped Rosamond after the baby was born and Roger WAS Johnny-on-the-spot when Rosamond gave birth. I owe them that." Billy Bob whirled around. "You owe them that. YOU owe them that? When are you going to get it through that thick skull of yours that the baby is NOT yours? She's MINE."

Daniel looked at Billy Bob with surprise. "Didn't you ever wonder why that baby was a decent size and six weeks early? Six weeks early translates into a 7 1/2 month baby. And I understand they are alot smaller than that. John can't have kids. He's out of the running. That leaves yours truly."
Billy Bob downs his Scotch. "Stuff it, you liar."
Daniel downed his, too, and said, "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt, Montgomery. But hey, a topic for another night."

The disc jockey played Anita Baker's "Sweet Love". Rosamond's face flushed for it was the song John had put on the night they were stranded at Jameson Osgood's beach house. John held out his hand to Rosamond and they melded together on the dance floor. Rosamond had a few glasses of champagne and for that moment Billy Bob ceased to exist for her. John held her close and whispered in her ear, forgetting himself that Rosamond's husband was there or not even caring if he was.
Daniel said, "Wow, would you look at that? They act as if they've been doing that all their lives. They never even missed a beat. Cast a single shadow as it were. More Scotch, Montgomery?"
Daniel handed him another glass. The song ended.
Bethia and Roger cut their wedding cake which was a three-tiered number with little candles trailing up the sides. They fed each other cake and nicely, too. No cake shoving for these two, they had too much love and respect for each other.
Billy Bob stood next to Rosamond. "Having a good time, Sugah?" He grasped her arm tightly. She smiled through clenched teeth. "Would you please stop acting like a caveman and unhand me? You'll leave bruises. Now, Bethia is going to throw her bouquet and I want to do all I can to make sure little Marthy gets it. The girl needs a good dose of self-confidence and I intend to see that she gets it."

Marilyn, Marthy, Bess, Eleanor and some of Roger's cousins crowded around. Bethia turned her back and threw her bouquet. The bouquet landed right in Rosamond's arms and she wasn't even trying to catch it. Rose lobbed it and it landed right in Marthy's arms. Rose gave her a wink and a smile. Marthy blushed.
"Looks like you're next, Marthy!" Jack smiled at her.
"Would you like to go on the terrace for a breath of fresh air, Marthy?" "I'd love to, Jack!"
Jack held the door open for her. She stepped out to where there was jasmine and lavender in the air. "I never dreamed of such an elegant affair, did you, Jack? This is so much better than Windsor Castle. Imagine! The two of us, a scullery maid and a stable boy."
Jack sighed. "Guess we were meant for better things. I must admit, I have never seen you looking so pretty, Marthy. This time frame suits you--suits both of us. Blessed we were the day that William came into our lives. Why, Marthy, you are shivering!"
Marthy was shivering, not from cold but from anticipation. Jack put his arm around her and drew her to him. He looked down at her and she looked at him in the moonlight. He gently tilted her face to his and there, at Bethia's wedding, under the stars, Marthy got her first kiss. It was everything she had imagined---and more.

Bethia and Roger changed in an adjoining room. They had planned a short four day honeymoon to Vermont. Bethia threw her arms around Roger and cried, "I must be the most fortunate woman on the face of the earth!"
Roger hugged her and laughed. "I shouldn't laugh but thank goodness for Rosamond's messed up love life or we would never have met!"
Bethia sighed. "I guess in a roundabout way we have Daniel to thank for this. It's hard to believe something so devious could lead to something so beautiful!"
Roger hung his tux on a hanger. "Well, my love, sometimes the most beautiful flowers have the most fertilizer shoveled on. Jerry said he'd take my tux back to the house for me. And are you ready to go, Mrs. Bidwell?"
Bethia hugged him. "Mrs. Bidwell! I DO like the sound of that!"

Dr. and Mrs. Bidwell made their first official public debut. Eleanor gave both of them a big hug. "Now be good to our little girl, Roger, or I will sic Marilyn on you!"
Roger faked a cringe and laughed.
Rosamond hugged Bethia and whispered with a catch in her voice, "Oh, Bethia, it was just beautiful! No one else but you deserves such happiness. I couldn't be happier and I don't know how I would have survived this past year without you. You are the best!"
Bethia hugged her tightly back. "Be good to yourself, Rose! And I'll talk to you in a few days."
Everyone else hugged and kissed the couple goodbye.
Roger and Beth got in his car and drove off for their honeymoon and towards the peace and quiet they so richly deserved.

AFTER the Reception.....................by Coralynn

As they all see Roger's car disappear in the distance, everyone feels satisfaction that the wedding and reception were about as perfect as any they had ever attended.
Patrick puts an arm around Marilyn's shoulder and comments, "This was great fun! Now that they're safely away, what say you and I go out for a drink?"
Marilyn looks at him quizzically and answers, "Haven't we all had enough?"
"Yes, I suppose we have," he capitulates, "What I really had in mind was that you and I get to know each other better. I'm still curious about why you're a dead ringer for Marilyn Monroe...your first name is Marilyn, too, oddly enough...."
"No, my first name is actually Sally," she informs him, "They call me Marilyn basically as a joke because of the uncanny resemblance."
"Didn't I read that Arthur Miller thinks your a clone of his late wife?" he presses on.
"Oh, that! What a fiasco that was! Very unfortunate. The poor man!" is all Marilyn says as she walks away.
He catches up with her, "So, uhhhhh, Sally, would you like to accompany me to the opera tomorrow evening? I have tickets for two!" he insists.
"OK, sure!" she finally agrees, "What opera are they performing?"
"'LaBoheme!'" he says enthusiastically, "Surely that one is familiar to you. It's probably the most familiar opera of all, that and 'Carman'!"
"I know about opera," she bristles a bit, "I also know a lot about plays, museums, both art and historical, and I've read 'Les Miserables' from cover to cover....."
He's embarrased that he may have sounded condescending, "Wow! You're way ahead of me!"
"I'm way ahead of almost everyone," she laughs to make sure he doesn't think she's being overly defensive, "I don't look like the brightest penny in the roll, but I may very well be."
He puts his arm back around her shoulders as they walk back to the reception hall where the party is far from breaking up.
Luke, from his vantage point at the table nearest to the lawns where MM and Patrick have been standing, frowns, making deep furrows between his eyes.
Someone is moving into my territory, making advances to my lady love, he thinks darkly, which is my own fault. Why haven't I been more open with Marilyn? She knows not the depth of my devotion. Now here we have this hot-shot lawyer coming on strong. I may have to write a piano sonata for her.......yes, in my old style.....something thundering yet tender, hmmmmmmm, I'll begin it tonight.......give it to her for a birthday present. Of course I never found out when her birthday is, but I will. I will! Nobody is going to steal Ludwig VanBeethoven's lady away from him. Nobody!

AFTER Reception: Storm Clouds Gather......by Terri

The dancing continued on after Roger and Bethia left. Daniel looked over at John and Rosamond dancing and laughing. Daniel refilled Billy Bob's glass. He said, "Funny thing, the night of the rehearsal dinner. John was the first one back. That was unusual for him. Eleanor is usually Miss Punctuality. But she and Jerry didn't get back until after 1:00 AM."
Billy Bob looked at Daniel. "What time did your brother get in?"
Daniel said, "Let's see...must have been about 11:00."
Billy Bob did some quick calculations. Rosamond got in at 10:30...it's a half an hour drive to the big house...
"Good grief, are they still dancing? Maybe I should cut in." Daniel said.
Billy Bob downed his scotch in one gulp. "Don't bother. I need to take care of this."
He walked over to where Rosamond and John were dancing and tapped him not too gently on the shoulder.
"Mind if I dance with my own wife?"
John turned around. He looked questioningly at Rosamond. She shrugged and John relinquished Rosamond to her husband. Billy Bob grabbed her tightly around the waist. "Do you mind, darling? You are squeezing the breath out of me!" she gasped.
Billy Bob said sarcastically, "REALLY? You didn't seem to mind it a few minutes ago."
She pulled back. "Would you like to clarify that?"
"Certainly, Sugar. I saw the way you looked at John Gwinnett. Everyone saw."
"I don't know what in the world you're talking about. He is an usher. I am a bridesmaid. He escorted me from the ceremony. Case closed."
"What about the night I got home from Austin? He brought you home, didn't he? You were at the rehearsal together."
Rosamond said, "He was there, yes. Eleanor brought me home. I had a dead car battery. You knew that."
Billy Bob accusingly said to her. "According to Daniel, John was the first one back, Eleanor didn't come in until 1:00."
Rose thought quickly. "Well, then, she must have gone back out again. What is this, the Inquisition? What's next, the rack? The Iron Maiden? You are actually going to believe Daniel, Daniel the guy who wouldn't know the truth if he sat on it and it bit him in the..."
"Don't lie to me, Rosamond. If you even think of cheating on me..."
"You'll what? Lock me in my room? Install a lo-jack on me so you can track my every move?"
"Not a bad idea, actually."
Rose said, "This possessiveness is getting rather old, darling," and she turned away from him. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her to the corner. "Know what I think, sweetheart? I think you and Gwinnett have been doing a little dancing. Dancing in the sheets."
She jerked her hand away. "Don't be crude, Montgomery."
John came up to them. "Problem, Rosamond?"
She and Billy Bob glared at each other. "Nothing I can't handle."
Billy Bob turned to John. "Beat it. It doesn't concern you. This is between a man and his woman."
John got between the two of them. "Oh, but it is. Rosamond is a good friend. Rose, are you alright?"
Billy Bob shoved John. "I should have taken care of you a long time ago. You've been hanging around Rosamond a little too much. Her name is Rosamond MONTGOMERY now. My wife."
John pushed Billy Bob back which was really gutsy of him, seeing Billy Bob had about 3" and 30 lbs on him.
"I don't like the way you treat her."
The pushing and the shoving continued but they were trying to keep their voices low.
As Rose turned around, Daniel was standing next to her. "I think I should warn you that your husband is not in a very good mood. He's had quite a bit to drink and is not at all pleased with your--how shall I say?--public flaunting of your relationship with my brother."
She looked him straight in the eye and said, "What 'relationship' are you talking about? Daniel, are you behind this?"
Daniel feigned surprise. "Me? Can I help it if your husband is starting to see some things he was blind to before?"
Jack and Marthy came in. Jack put himself between John and Billy Bob. "OK, guys, enough of this.
Billy Bob pushed Jack out of the way. "Sonny, this doesn't concern you. It's between the two of us."

Rosamond got between John and Billy Bob. She said with controlled fury, "Enough of this! Billy Bob, you are drunk!"
Billy Bob grabbed her by the arm and pulled her to him. "So what if I am?"
John grabbed Billy Bob by the shoulder and turned him around. "Lay a hand on her and I'll kill you!"
Billy Bob sneered, "You and what army?"
The pushing and the shoving continued.
Daniel pulled Rosamond over to him. "This could go on for hours, babe. Want a ride home?"
Rosamond said, "Why do I get the feeling that you are behind this, Daniel? Divide and conquer, that's the way you play it."
Daniel smiled his beguilingly wicked smile. "I just can't forget that night riding home in your car from the Dew Drop Inn, listening to the radio. I pulled you close but you said you didn't like it--you were such a liar! Because when we kissed--FIRE!"
Rosamond allowed a small smile to play at the corners of her mouth. "Yes, your kisses were burning but if you noticed my heart stayed cool."
Daniel saw that smile and was encouraged. "Just think! Romeo and Juliet, Samson and Delilah---Daniel and Rosamond! Years from now we will be the stuff poets will write about! Like Rafe and Bess!"
Rosamond saw that she had him. "Believe what you want to, Daniel. But I'll NEVER be with you again."
Daniel took a cigarette out, lit it and took a long drag. He said, "Never say never, darling!"

Rosamond turned back to the shoving match between Billy Bob and John. She got there just as her husband was telling John in Anglo-Saxon terms exactly what he thought was going on between his wife and John.
John gave him a hard look, drew back his fist and punched Billy Bob.
As Billy Bob staggered up from the floor, John rubbed his fist and said in a dead calm voice, "I've been wanting to do that since the day I met you."
He turned and walked off.

Busted Hands, Busted Hearts and Just Plain Busted!....by Terri

Billy Bob stood up and rubbed his jaw. Jerry and Eleanor ran after John. John was rubbing his hand. Eleanor exclaimed, "What happened?"
John winced. "He had it coming. He's had it coming for the last year."
Jerry looked at John's hand. "John, that doesn't look too good."
John walked over to the bar, took a double Scotch and tossed it back. "And now there's a good chance I should go to the emergency room." Eleanor gathered up her things. "We'll drive you." She called to William.
The fight was in a corner of the reception so most people had no idea what had gone on.
"Big Guy, do you think you could take Little Will home? John seems to have broken his hand and we need to get him to the ER."
William bustled forward. "Certainly! John, what happened? Are you alright?"
John grimaced. "No, I'm not. Montgomery was falling and my fist broke his fall. See to Rosamond, will you? I've got to go before I pass out." Jerry, Eleanor and John left.
William walked over to Rosamond. "Dear, we will see you home."
Rosamond looked over at Billy Bob and said softly to William and Celeste. "NO. I'll handle this on my own. Thank you anyway."
Willliam laid a hand on her arm. "Rosamond, you don't have to."
Rosamond turned to them, straightened up and said, "Yes, I do. Don't worry. I'll be fine."
William said, "Are you sure?"
"Quite sure."
They left with Celeste giving her a squeeze of her hand. "Remember, Rosamond. Life-altering decisions. Don't act in haste."
Rosamond gave her a brittle smile. "Thanks, 'Mom'." and kissed Celeste quickly.
William and Celeste found little Will licking the frosting off the cake with his finger.
"Ready to go, young man?"
"Yes, Poppy William. Uncle John said I was better than King Arthur's knights!"
"That you were, laddy, that you were...." as their voices faded down the hall.

Billy Bob stood up and grabbed Rosamond by the arm roughly.
"Come on, we're going home, too."
Rose pulled herself out of his grasp. "No, we are not. No one uses the kind of language you did about me. I'm supposed to be your wife. Have you no respect for me?"
Billy Bob snapped. "Respect is something you earn, darling. You get that when you stop acting like a common trollop."
He walked to the door. "If you are not next to me in the next five seconds, YOU will be the one looking at the taillights."
Rose defiantly stood in her spot, not moving. "I'm taking a cab home and so are you." Billy Bob shrugged, "Suit yourself."

He threw open the door, gave her a last look and said, "I'm really sorry, Rosamond." and went out into the summer air.
Daniel stood there with one eyebrow raised. "OK, Sweetheart, what are you going to do now?"
Rosamond sighed. "What I have to." She called the Chappaqua Police Station.
"Hello, I'd like to report a DUI. He's driving a black Mercedes, NY license plate DDB 768, leaving the Chapel of the Pines and heading out Rt. 141 northbound....No, I can't leave my name....thank you."
Daniel drew back in surprise. "Whoa, woman, you mean business! You really ARE mad at him!"
She looked at Daniel and said, "Don't be a goof, Daniel. He'll kill himself or some innocent person. It's for his own good. Now, would you be so kind as to get me the number of Yellow Cab?"
Daniel took the phone out of her hand. "I'll drive you."
Rosamond retorted, "Oh, yes, sure you will!"
Daniel put on his most sincere face. "No. Honest. Anywhere you want to go. The Big House...The Blue House....Elmwood....the Castle...the Montgomery Ranch....Happy Hour Motel...."
Rosamond gave him a disgusted look.
"OK, OK, just kidding!"
Rose narrowed her eyes. "Promise no funny stuff? I am wearing spike heels and you are vulnerable, IF you know what I mean."
Daniel threw up his hands. "Honest Injun, no offense intended, Little Feather!"
Rose sighed. "OK, but let's just drive a bit while I calm down and figure things out."
She walked ahead of Daniel. He clenched his fist, pulled it back and said, "ALL RIGHT!"

It was after 1:00 AM when John finally was seen at the emergency room. His hand was swollen and bruised. The doctor came in and took one look at his hand. "What did you do, hit a brick wall?"
John winced when he touched it. "Something like that."
"Well, let's get you to X-ray."
By 3:00 AM it was determined that John had indeed broken his hand. A cast was put on and pain killers were administered. He came out of the ER to the waiting room where El and Jerry were waiting. Jerry was asleep in the chair, El was reading a magazine.
"OK, 'Tyson', how's the hand?"
John yawned. "I don't know until the pain killer wears off. But this puppy is broken. It would have to be my right hand, too. I guess Daniel will have to do alot more at the gym. My hand is going to be out of commission for the next six weeks. Damn! That Montgomery is built like Mt. Rushmore!"
The three of them walked out to Jerry's car. John asked, "Did William take Rosamond home?"
Jerry said, "No, I think she was getting a cab for her and Montgomery. Lord knows he was in no shape to drive."
John asked, "Eleanor, would you call her? Please?"
Eleanor said firmly, "No, I will not. Let her alone right now. She'll be alright. I have had my cellphone on all night and if there were any 'complications', Ro' would have called me. Stop treating her like she's a frail flower, John. She's a grown woman with two children and, yes, a husband. Believe me, she can handle Montgomery."
They pulled into the driveway of the house on Winding Willow. Eleanor turned to Jerry.
"Why don't you stay overnight, honey? It's 3:30. You can stay in Bethia's room."
Jerry smiled. "Thanks! I didn't feel like going home anyway."
Celeste came downstairs. "Oh, so there you are!" She grabbed John's hand carefully. "Oh, so it IS broken."
John asked, "How's Will?"
"He fell asleep in the car on the way home. He was so nervous and you telling him he was better than the knights made him proud as a peacock. You are wonderful for him, John. He can't figure out how you are going to be his daddy and Mr. Montgomery already is but he only has one mommy." John sat down. "I wish I knew, too."
Eleanor helped John off with his tux jacket. "I'd help you further, John, but I think that is out of my department!" she laughed.
"Don't worry, I'll manage. I think that pain pill is kicking in, I'd better head up before I fall asleep in a soup tureen again!"
Celeste yawned, "I'm going to bed, too. Glad my chicks are all in for the night."
Jerry looked out. "Daniel's Jeep isn't here yet. Did he already move out of the castle?"
John yawned again. "Knowing Daniel, he got lucky at the wedding!" He headed up the stairs.
Jerry said, "What a day! You people sure know how to party hardy! My frat parties were easier than this!"
Eleanor laughed. "I know at least that you are too tired for a panty raid!"
Jerry put his arm around her and kissed her. "El, have I told you lately you're a peach?"
Eleanor laughed and turned the lights out. "What a day!" she sighed.

Billy Bob eased himself behind the wheel of his Mercedes. Thank goodness I took this instead of the T-bird. No stickshift. This baby will practically drive itself home. GPR, lead me to it.
He sat in his car for five minutes to see if Rosamond would follow him out. Looks like nada. At least I know she isn't going home with Gwinnett, that's for sure. That guy sure packed a mean punch! He rubbed his jaw. Sure hope it's not dislocated. Guess I won't know until the booze wears off.
He backed the car out and hit a lightpost. He put the car in drive and hit the stop sign at the end of the street. Thank goodness no traffic. He pulled onto Rt. 141. This IS northbound, isn't it?

He began thinking over the evening. What the hell happened? Did I imagine things? Did Daniel put thoughts into my head and I read everything wrong? What exactly did I say to Rosamond? Or about her? No, I couldn't have possibly said THAT! Or did I?
Lost in thought, his speedometer hit 80 mph. He heard the sounds of a siren.
Hell, that can't be for ME? Oh, #$^#@ , it is!
He pulled over, scraping a tree and taking out a mailbox post. He barely missed a cat.
He slumped down in the car. What a night! Like I really need this now! A young patrolman walked cautiously up to his car.
"Sir, would you please raise your hands and step out of the car?"
Billy Bob slurred, "I'd really rather not, Officer."
The officer said, "I'm afraid I am going to have to insist, sir."
Billy Bob slid out of the door, grabbing the door handle for support. His knees buckled but he managed an upright position. If not, this will have to do.
"Sir, would you mind telling me where you are coming from and where is this fire you are heading to?"
"Why, sure, Officer.....McGee, is it?" Billy Bob squinted at the nametag. "Just came from a wedding and heading home."
"By yourself?"
"Oh, well, no. The little woman will be coming by pretty soon." He leaned over a whispered conspiratorially to him. "See, we had a little disagreement and she opted for a more public form of transportation."
Officer McGee stepped back, overcome by alcoholic fumes. "May I see your driver's license, registration and insurance card, sir?"
Billy Bob said, "Sure. It's in my glove compartment. I'm getting it now. Don't shoot me in the back when I'm looking, McGee. OK? Is it a deal?" McGee said, "Just get it, sir."

Billy Bob leaned over and fell on his face on the front seat. His legs were sticking out of the car door. Hell, that's what happens when you are 6'3". He pulled a handgun out of the glove compartment. Ooops, hope I have the concealed weapon permit for this!
He stuffed it under the seat. He took out a pair of panties. Where did these come from? Wonder if they are Rosamond's? Or maybe that redhead's from last summer...
A car manual. He threw that in the back seat. Hell, like I really fix my own cars!

He pulled out a ketchup packet with a 'best if used by 1999" stamp on it. That's weird since this car is a 2002...a Bic pen that exploded....three gas receipts and a Visa card that expired last September. A tube of lipstick. Rosamond's? Or that redhead's...an empty bottle of Poison...is that Rosamond's? Or does she wear Opium? Hey, a half pack of cigarettes from when I used to smoke!...three packs of, well, don't need them anymore since I am married!....a mangled joint, better dump that, haven't used that for over two years, uh, maybe later! He pulled out his papers.
"Here they are, Officer."
McGee said, "Stay right here and don't move."

McGee went back to his patrol car and looked at the name on the license. Holy cow, William Robert Montgomery. THE William Robert Montgomery? Address? Yep, that matches up with the Double B ranch. Looks like Miss Montgomery's brother is in a heap of trouble. Now, how would that look, me running him in? Would I look like a hero for saving him from a possible vehicular manslaughter/suicide? Or would she think I was a real jerk? Looks like I'm gonna need backup on this! He picked up the radio and called in for backup.

Rosamond stopped suddenly. "There are some terms I want to clarify before I let you drive me home, Daniel. Not one word of Julie. I am not up to it. No arguing. You mention her name and I will jump out of the Jeep, I don't care if you are going 100 mph, I wll take a dive. None of your moves, either."
Daniel said, "Aw, hell! You drive a hard bargain. Deal! Let's go."
Rosamond climbed into the Jeep and folded her dress around her legs. "This certainly wasn't made for 'prom night', was it?"
Daniel brightened up. "Hey, that's a great idea! Let's pretend we are 17 and going to our prom! Or better yet, AFTER the prom! You are in a formal, I am in a tux, a little fantasy role playing! After all, neither of us went to a prom--it will be our first! Bet you haven't had a 'first' in a long time, huh, honey?"
Rosamond looked at him like he had lost his mind. He laughed, "What's the matter, Sugar, never did any fantasy role-playing?"
She blushed but didn't answer.

They headed north on Rte 141. Daniel looked over. "Hey, isn't that your husband's black Mercedes pulled over?" He slowed down to look. Rosamond took a quick glance. "Sure is. Good. He's busted. Serves him right. At least I know where he is and that he's safe, especially if he's in the slammer overnight. Guess I can plan on bailing him out tomorrow morning."

Daniel drove down a dirt road. "Just where are you heading, Daniel?" she said with a slight panic in her voice.
Daniel bounced down the road. "It's where I come to chill out when things get too much. It's quiet. Oh, don't worry. I will be a perfect gentleman. Unless you want me to be otherwise. Doesn't matter--gentleman or not, I'd still be perfect!"
He parked under the trees with a view of the lake. Rosamond looked up. "My goodness, I haven't seen a sky like that since England! Too much light pollution in Chappaqua."
Daniel gave her his hand. She frowned. "I don't know about this 'new and improved' Daniel. I don't quite trust him." He helped her out of the Jeep.

He led her down to a small copse. Her hair had come undone and was hanging in tendrils. She stood in her bridesmaid dress that was all sapphire and black lace. The moon was shining down on her pale hair, her eyes luminous in the moonlight.
Daniel whispered, "My Lord, you take my breath away! I can just imagine you in the court of Henry, looking like that. No wonder he fell like a ton of bricks!"
Rosamond blushed. "Daniel, I can't certainly go down there like this. I'll get my dress dirty."
Daniel raised his finger up. "I've an idea. Let's take your dress off! No, don't look at me like that. It's not what you think." He reached back behind the seat. "I have one of my shirts here. It's a long oxford shirt, it will cover all your 'bits and pieces'. That way your dress won't get dirty." Daniel handed her his shirt.
Rosamond frowned. "I don't know....OK, but turn your back!"
Daniel turned his back and Rosamond slipped out of her bridesmaid dress, standing there in her lingerie, pantyhose and heels. She slipped the shirt on, removed her hose and shoes and threw it all in the front seat. She looked up and saw Daniel's back but his face in the sideview mirror. He grinned.
"YOU JERK!"
He laughed. "Hey, you knew I was a 'snake' when you got in the car with me!"
Rose suppressed a smile. Daniel reached in the back and got a blanket, binoculars, and a flask.
"What's that for, pervert?"
"Stargazing. I'm going to show you things you ain't never seen before!"
Rose said dubiously. "I doubt it, Daniel."
Daniel grabbed her hand. He led her to the banks of the lake. He spread the blanket out and sat down. He pulled Rosamond down next to him. He opened up the flask and took a long swig. He handed it to her.
"What's in this?"
Daniel laughed. "Nothing but Henry8's finest cognac. He'll never miss it! The man is a veritable liqour store!"
Rosamond took a long swig and started coughing. Daniel said, "Honey, you are supposed to SIP, not swig! At least ladies don't swig."
Rose hiccupped. "Who said I was a lady?"
Daniel laid down, grabbed Rose and said, "Lie down."
Rose sat up. "Certainly not!"
"Well. how am I going to show you things if you won't lie down?"
"Daniel, I'm leaving!"
"Huh? Oh, Rosamond, I don't mean things like THAT! I meant with the binoculars and the stars. Of course, if you WANT..."
Rose laid down. "Certainly not!" she laughed. "Maybe I could show YOU a thing or two..."
They both dissolved into giggles. Daniel took a swig, Rose took another sip, which very well could pass for a swig.
Daniel took the binoculars. "Look here. It's the nebulous of Andromeda." He handed her the binoculars. She breathed, "It's absolutely wonderful, Daniel!"
He took them back. "Here's the rings around Saturn. Have you ever seen such a sight in your life?" He took another drink of brandy, handed the flask and the binoculars to her.

After a while, Rosamond lay there and said, "How do you know so much about the celestial bodies, Daniel?"
Daniel ran his hand over her body. "I know all about heavenly bodies, darling."

Rosamond giggled. The brandy was beginning to take effect on both of them. She pushed his hand off. "Seriously, Daniel."
Daniel sighed. "I would spend nights out in the barn. Just to get away. Charles and John were both so perfect. I felt I couldn't measure up to either of them. So I became the exact opposite of them. Charles was a lot like John." Daniel sighed again. "Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and pull Charles out just like you all did with me. Charles usually stuck up for me. He realized I had a lot to measure up to with John, but he still liked me. John was Mother's favorite. John could do no wrong. Every thing John touched turned to gold. Like with acting. The fitness center. You. Rosamond, do you think if you had met me first, you and I might be the ones involved instead of you and John?"
Rose said softly, "What makes you think John and I are still involved, Daniel?"
"Aren't you?"
"No," she lied.
Daniel breathed a sigh. "Then I DO have a chance!"
"I'm married."
"Ah, but for how long?"
Daniel turned to Rosamond and pointed to the skies. "Look up there. The midnight moon."
Rose said, "Eleanor said nothing good happens past midnight."
Daniel said, "That may well be. It's moonbeams are drifting down throught the lazy sway of the trees. Feel the breeze."
He handed Rosamond the bottle of brandy. It was going down easier and easier.
He cupped her face in his hands. "I saw that look in your eyes, Rosamond, looking into mine. Don't say a word. On the shadowed ground, there's no one out here, just you and I. The stars are up in the skies and in your eyes. We are two lost leaves, drifting free on the breeze of a warm summer night. I've already heard what your body is saying to mine.."
And Daniel kissed her.

Officer Alan Carson arrived as back-up.
Officer McGee motioned him over. "It's a definite DUI but I didn't run the Breathalyzer. That's Mr. Montgomery of the Double B Ranch. I, uh, have a situation that I may not want to get involved with. You see, he, ah, has a sister and she's a real cute girl, totally naive and she may not understand and ah, you see, I want to ask her out..."
Carson tried to stifle his laughter. HE knew that Montgomery didn't have a sister. He knew that the girl was Montgomery's wife and that she was fooling around heavy duty on Montgomery. Not that Carson cared. But he knew it was Gwinnett and he liked the guy. He didn't want any homicides in his jurisdiction. Plus the fact that McGee was a pain in the rear eager beaver. That's what happens with rookie cops--over-zealous. Busting people for making out in cars. Maybe he's a voyeur. He sure hangs around Venus Point alot. Carson sighed.
"OK, McGee, I'll help you out."
They walked back to where Billy Bob was sitting in his car. "Looks like you'll have to come to the station. We need to do a Breathalyzer there. McGee will pull your car into that lot over there and lock it up but we will take the keys. Now get in the back of the cruiser. I guess we can trust you without the handcuffs, Mr. Montgomery." Billy Bob swore under his breath but got in the cruiser and off to the station he and Carson went.
A Breathalyzer was adminstered and Billy Bob registered 2.0.
McGee said, "I'm afraid we'll have to put you under arrest, Mr. Montgomery. You are allowed one phone call."
Damn! Billy Bob thought. Guess I'd better call Rosamond. Oh, great, she's going to LOVE this. He dialed her cellphone.
"The cellular customer you have dialed is not available at this time..." "Aw, hell!" Several officers looked up. "Sorry, I can't seem to get hold of my wife."
Carson and another officer looked at each other and tried to suppress a smile. Carson whispered to the other officer, "Check John's cellphone, bet you get her then!"
McGee said, "Anyone else you want to call? Your lawyer?"
Billy Bob snapped, "What the hell do I need a lawyer for? I AM a lawyer!" He dialed the Dew Drop Inn.
"It's your nickel..uh, dime...uh, 35 cents. Hey, Verla, is it really 35 cents now? It IS? OH! Hello, Dew Drop Inn! Can I help ya?" Billy Bob said, "Bobby Joe, I need your help. I'm in jail."
"Jail? What did they do, find a joint on you?"
"NO, moron, it was for DUI. I went to that blasted wedding with Rose, and well, I'll explain it later. They will release me on 2000.00 bond and my own recognance. So get down here as fast as you can, I don't want the old man to find out."
Within an hour, Bobby Joe was down with the money. Billy Bob was sitting in a cell.
Bobby Joe burst out laughing. "Hell, BB, I never expected to see you in jail for DUI--thought it would be more like cattle rustling!"
Billy Bob snapped, "I have had one helluva night, my head is splitting, I may have a dislocated jaw, a wife who probably will never speak to me again and a dad who will probably slap me upside the head if he ever finds out. Now get me out of here pronto!"
Bobby Joe posted the bond and Officer McGee said, "You can pick up your car keys tomorrow morning, Mr. Montgomery. It is best if you leave them with us. Just to be sure."
Billy Bob glared at McGee. "You think I'm going to risk another DUI?" As they turned to go out the door, McGee said, "Please tell your sister I said hello and that I will call her by the weekend when I have time off!"
Bobby Joe turned to Billy Bob. "Donna's in town? Why didn't you tell me?" Billy Bob said, "I have no idea what that doofus is talking about. Now I need to find out why Rosamond didn't answer her cellphone...."

Rosamond started to kiss him back. She pulled away. "No, Daniel. It isn't going to happen."
Daniel smiled and handed her the flask. She took another sip.
Daniel said, "Ah, Rosamond, another time, another place and it could have been us involved. I have always wanted to ask you. Why did you marry Montgomery and in such haste? You could have been a single mother. It's not a new concept."

They were passing the flask back regularly now. It was almost finished, which held a considerable amount of cognac.
"You. You scared me, Daniel. You were so...so insistent...so intense. You tricked me and seduced me. You couldn't be trusted."
"You mean you couldn't trust yourself around me." "That too."
Rosamond looked up and pointed excitedly. "Oh, look, Daniel! A shooting star!"
Daniel said, "Make a wish on it, Rosamond."
She closed her eyes. After a few seconds, she said, "OK, Daniel, now you make a wish, too. Maybe it will come true!"
He said softly "It already has. You are here. With me." He put his arms around her and kissed her on her neck.
"Oh, Rosamond, I love you." he whispered.
Rosamond returned his kiss. "Ohhh, JOHN!"
And Rosamond passed out.

AFTERMATH OF A RECEPTION HOLOCAUST.....by Terri

Daniel looked down at the limp Rosamond.
"Aw, hell!" he swore. Just when I was making progress. Now, WHY did she call me 'John'? There's more to this...could she have lied to me? Wouldn't be the first time.
He looked at his watch. Three A.M. Wow!
He wondered what he was going to do with her. There's no way I can take her back to that ranch house. I could dump her in their stable---no, not with that Winchester in the barn and the outside chance that Billy Bob is home. The Castle? I have to be out by morning, besides, Henry would blab all over. Don't need anymore trouble.
Happy Hour Motel? He smiled. No, too sleazy for her. Motel 6? Naw. Guess there is only one thing to do, he sighed.
He walked over to his Jeep, threw Rose's clothes in the back and went back to the blanket. She was totally trashed. He gathered up the flask and binoculars, then came back, wrapped Rosamond in the blanket and picked her up. He put her in the Jeep, blanket and all. Sliding into the driver's seat, Rosamond's head dropped to his shoulder. He smiled. Almost a terrific night. I can't believe I actually shared my love of stargazing with her! First time for everything!

In about a half hour he pulled quietly into the carpark on Winding Willow. He crept stealthily up to the windows, counting. Let's see...bottom floor, one..two...three..four!
That's it! He rapped quietly on the window.
"Celeste? Celeste!" he whispered.
Celeste threw open her window. "Daniel?" she whispered. "What on earth are you doing here at this hour?"
Daniel grinned. "I have a package for you but I didn't dare drop it on the front yard. Can you quietly let me in the kitchen? No one is up, are they?"
Celeste was putting her robe on. "No, it's all quiet. Meet me at the door."
Celeste was wondering, now what on earth can Daniel be dropping off at THIS hour?
As she opened the door, her hand flew to her mouth. "Well, I'd say you DO have a package there!"
Daniel had Rosamond wrapped in his blanket. "FedEX at your service, ma'am. Where shall I put 'er?"
Celeste said, "It's late, I don't want to disturb the others. Your brother is sound asleep, on pain killers, he broke his hand on that big ox she's married to. Can you manage to get her up the stairs?"
"No problem, this baby is light as a feather and I work out! Shall I put her in her old room?"
"Yes, please!"
Daniel took her upstairs and laid her on the bed. Celeste and Daniel stood looking at her.
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. "Where's her dress? Her shoes? Daniel, if I didn't have the gift, I would say you abused or seduced her!"
Daniel said, "Long story, some things happened after you all left. We went somewhere to relax--don't look at me like that!--we just talked, shared a bottle of brandy, a few kisses--well, what do you expect, we both aren't made of ice! But no, that's as far as it went. More's the pity!"

Celeste tried to suppress a smile. "I guess that's about as good as we could hope for out of you, you rapscallion. Thank you for bringing her to a safe place. But where is her husband? Does this mean...?'
Daniel shrugged. "I don't know what will happen in the morning. He's in the slammer on a DUI charge, I would imagine. Can I call you tomorrow to see how she is? I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't tell the others of my kind deed. A bad reputation is better than none at all!' he winked.
Celeste gave him a pat on the arm. "It was mighty decent of you. Yes, call me. I'll let you know."
"I'll be at the Castle until about 9:00. Last day there, you know. I'm moving in with Rafe. And now, back to the Castle for an ice cold shower..or two..or three!"
He grinned and waved good-bye.
Celeste sighed. Daniel and Rafe? That's a match made in hell! She covered Rosamond up, pushed her hair out of her eyes, tucked her in and turned out the lights.

The next morning, Billy Bob woke up in his own bed. He reached over. No wife. Where was she? Must have slept in the baby's room. He ambled over and opened the door. Hmmm...she's not there. I guess she's up already. Julie's not in her crib.

Must be downstairs getting breakfast ready. Heaven help us if it's bacon! He turned the shower on, bracing himself against the wall, waiting for the hot water to shoot forth. Ahhh, that felt good! Oooooh, my jaw! He moved it gingerly around. Doesn't feel dislocated but must be one hell of a bruise. OK, he got lucky that time...but not the next. Billy Bob stood under the shower as the hot water poured over him and cleared his head. He fantasized about different ways to do in John Gwinnett. As he dried off, he thought of how he was going to cover everything over so his dad didn't find out. I COULD call in a few markers....pay off the community service. Enough money can get you out of anything....maybe I should just hire a hit man for Gwinnett..no, I'd want the satisfaction of doing it myself...what am I saying? Murder IS a little drastic!....I COULD have his kneecaps busted...hope I busted his hand to bits...maybe he'll keep them to himself...Rose is another matter. It's going to take alot to smooth this over with her.
Flowers? Couldn't hurt. It's going to take at least three dozen long-stemmed roses. She doesn't like candy...jewelry? That always does the trick...probably take diamonds AND emeralds for this one...maybe a cruise? A month in Europe?....get her away from all of them.

He pulled on his shirt, buttoning it on his way down the stairs.
Mary Ellen and J.R. Montgomery sat at the breakfast table. Juanita had Julie in her arms, getting her formula ready. She took one look at Billy Bob, smiled a little and said, "Excuse me, I'll take Miss Julie up to her nursery."
Billy Bob sat down at the table and said to her, "Would you please tell Rosamond I'm downstairs now? Breakfast is ready."
Juanita got a surprised look on her face. "But..but she isn't..I mean..OH! Julie! Come on, your bottle is ready!" and she hurried out of the room.
Billy Bob glanced quizzically at his parents. Mary Ellen sat there with pursed lips and a creased forehead, not saying a word and sipping her coffee.
J.R. said, "Well, the morning paper came. Thought you would be interested in THIS!"
On the front page was a picture of John punching out Billy Bob. The headline read:

ACTOR AND HORSE BREEDER LOCKED IN TRIANGLE

J. R. cleared his throat. He read:

At a notable society wedding, guests were treated to a spectacle that they did not expect. John Gwinnett, actor for As the Planet Turns and wealthy horse breeder William Robert Montgomery, son of Senator John Robert Montgomery....
at this J.R. peered over his glasses and glared as Billy Bob slouched down in his chair, totally abashed

.....engaged in a pushing and shoving match. Words were exchanged and, from what sources could make out, involved attentions perceived as inappropriate according to Montgomery towards Montgomery's wife. Montgomery's wife is the former actress Rosamond de Clifford, from As the Planet Turns and currently on hiatus.

Billy Bob sat up straighter. "How many times to I have to tell that little piece of baggage I am married to that she QUIT..not hiatus!"
J.R. shot daggers at Billy Bob and he immediately slouched back in his chair again. J. R, resumed reading:

Threats were exchanged until Montgomery used, in inappropriate for print vernacular, exactly what he deemed the problem to be, whereas Gwinnett struck Montgomery in the jaw and said, 'I've been wanting to do that since the day I met you.'
Miss de Clifford and Gwinnett both won the Hottest Couple on Daytime Drama award in November.
Gwinnett, Montgomery and Miss de Clifford were unavailable for comment.

Mary Ellen sat there, still pursing her lips. J.R. folded the paper, calmly got up and poured himself another cup of coffee. He walked over, smacked Billy Bob on the back of the head and said, "They had to mention ME!"

John woke up at 7:00 AM, unable to sleep. His hand was throbbing. He took another Darvocet. The smell of coffee in the kitchen was unmistakable. Celeste was the only one up.
She said, "I can't get used to not seeing Bethia's smiling face across the table from me. She is a jewel. I am so glad she found Roger, though."
John smiled. "It WAS one helluva wedding, though...not to mention the reception. Where is everyone else?"
Celeste poured John a cup of coffee. "Eleanor is still sleeping, so is Jerry and I assume in Bethia's room. William is out planting more rosebushes, little Will is helping him. Marthy and Bess went out to breakfast with Marilyn, then they were going shopping. So it's just you and me for breakfast. Hungry, John?"
"No, not really."
"You seem pre-occupied."
"Well, yes--and these pain killers don't exactly lend themselves to a clear head. My hand is out of commission for the next six weeks. And just as I was getting the fitness center off the ground. Now how am I going to help people when I can't even lift a weight?"
Celeste said, "I have an idea. Why not train Rafe to be a fitness instructor? That way you can give Daniel more responsibility. I think Daniel has more going for him than people give him credit. They expect him to be a 'bad dude' and so he doesn't want to disappoint them."
John said, "He DID help me when Rosamond was freezing me out over Penelope Patterson. He brought me home. He could very well have let me drive home that way, no telling what would have happened then."
Celeste stood up. "I have something to show you. Come here."
She grabbed his hand and led him upstairs. "Celeste, what is going on?" Gently she opened the door to Rosamond's room. There, curled up in a blanket with her hair coming down, and in an old oxford shirt, sound asleep, was Rosamond.
John looked at Celeste and asked, "But how...?"
Celeste put her finger to her lips and said, "Don't ask, don't tell. And now I will leave you alone, John."
She smiled, backed out of the room, and shut the door.

John smoothed her hair back. She looked so small. What is she doing, wearing one of my old shirts? And how did she get here? He laid down next to her, put his arm around her and soon he was asleep, too.

Around 9:30 Rosamond stirred. She rolled over and looked into a familiar face. She bolted upright, grabbed her pillow and freaked out. She started screaming, "YOU PERVERT! YOU DEGENERATE! YOU PROMISED! OH NO, NOT AGAIN! NOT AGAIN!"
John woke up with a start and fended off her pillow blows. "WAIT! WAIT! WATCH THE HAND! THE HAND!"
Rosamond stopped in mid-thwack and dropped her pillow. "John? JOHN? Oh, thank heavens!" and she burst into tears.
He cradled her in his arms, rocking her while she sobbed.
"There, there, my love. No one is ever going to hurt you again. I promise."
Rose pulled back, looked at John, and bolted to the bathroom, sick as a dog.
John waited a few minutes, knocked on the door and said through it, "Uh, Rose? You allright? You aren't um, mm, uh,...not again, are you?"
She opened up the door, green to the gills. "No, John, I'm not. Too much last night. Too much chaos. Too much pathos. Too much brandy."
"How did you end up here?"
"Darned if I know!"

John went downstairs while Rosamond took a shower. Celeste was loading up the dishwasher. John asked, "Celeste, you know something. How did Rosamond get here?"
Celeste straightened up. "Let's just say you owe Daniel one. He used his brain and thought she would be safest here. But you didn't hear this from me. He didn't want anyone to know."
John looked in the cupboard. "Looks like he may be a little human after all. Unless..."
He frowned. No, not possible...
Celeste said, "Looking for something?"
"Rose is in the shower, I'm going to make breakfast and take it up to her." He grinned. "You know, breakfast in bed. Just the way it should have been if we were married." He started to scramble eggs and put bacon in the pan. He hesitated. "Celeste?"
"Hmmm?"
"What does your crystal ball show for us? Is there a chance?"
Celeste poured herself a cup of coffee and sat down. "Yes, John, I see you two together. But I see a stumbling block. A 6'3" stumbling block. And danger. You two must be very wary. It will not be smooth sailing. But the course of true love never is."
She put her hand over his. "I also see adventures for you. Rarely have I seen a love like yours and Rose's burn so intensely. You will prevail in the end. Oh, and to the question you are thinking....yes, I do see more children for you."
John grinned happily. "As long as I know she's mine!"
Celeste got up and gathered up the coffee cups. "Yes, John, no doubt about THAT... she's your true love and you are hers."

John fixed two breakfast plates of bacon, eggs, toast, juice and coffee and carried them up on a breakfast tray. Rosamond was just coming out of the bathroom, wrapped in her robe that she left in her room.
"OH! How wonderful! Have I told you lately, my Sir Galahad, that I love you?"
Just then the door flew open and Little Will flung himself at his mother. "Mummy! You came! Are you here to stay?"
She hugged Will. "Just for a few hours. I have to go home to Julie."
Will asked, "Why can't you and Julie come here to live? Please, Mum?"
John raised his eyebrow as if to ask, yeah, why not?
Rose sat at the edge of the bed and hugged him fiercely. 'It's not so easy, Will. Do you want to come live with me?"
Will said thoughtfully, "Can you manage without me, Mummy? Poppy William put me in charge of checking the roses every day for black spots. I have to tell him every morning and then he powders them."
Rose said, "You are happy here, then, Will?"
"Oh, yes, Mummy! I have Grandma Celeste and Uncle John...Mr. Montgomery is nice to me but I LOVE Uncle John. I wish HE was my daddy."
With that Will jumped off the bed. "I have to go. Poppy William wants me to look for salamanders."
Rose and John laughed. She sighed. "I have to eat this wonderful breakfast and then find out if my husband is in the....slammer, as it were?"
John got a shocked look on his face. "He's in jail? Whatever for?"
Rose smiled, "I called him in on a DUI. Want me to add assault and battery to it?"
John hugged her and said, "Babe, I fight my own battles!"

After breakfast, Rosamond and John came downstairs and sat on the patio. Will was hunting salamanders and showing them to Rose. She pretended to be afraid of them but in actuality, Rose was a great salamander hunter as a child in her day.
John said, "We need to make some plans, Rosamond. Especially after what went down at the reception. Montgomery didn't mince any words of what he thought the two of us have been doing."
"I'll handle him. For some reason he needs me. But I have an idea I wanted to run by you, darling."
Rose and John were sitting on the glider together. She laid her head on his shoulder.

"I was thinking of starting my own little business. Nothing big, really. My granny Margaret de Tonei was considered something of a 'white witch' in her day. She made potions. She looked like a veritable 'fountain of youth' --and my mother benefitted by it. Skin that was ageless. Elixirs of youth, she called them. I thought, if I could only get my hands on her potion book. She showed it to me once. She kept it under lock and key in a carved wooden casket. Don't look at me like that, sweetheart...not that sort of casket. The kind for valuable papers. She told me she would give it to me when she died. She didn't trust my mother--a dark side, she told me. Afraid Mother would use it for not-to-kosher reasons. You know, like she would turn another rival into a tree or a shrub. Lord, Mother would have a veritable forest if she could! Since we can adjust time travel so it looks like we were only gone an afternoon, we could time travel back to the 12th century, right after Granny died, pick up the book and scoot out of there. No one would know we were there, no one would be any wiser when we came back. It would be like I went shopping for an afternoon. Do you think William would lend me the coin? I mean, if you came with me? I don't think he trusts me by myself."

"But, Rose, where will you perform all this magic?"
"There's an old abandoned greenhouse on the ranch estate. It's away from everything. I checked the soil. It is primo for growing my own herbs and I can order other things like oils and salts through the internet." John threw his head back and laughed. "Miss de Clifford, you stun me!" She smiled. "I guess I got my ambitions from my mother! What do you say?"
"I say let me thing about it and talk it over with the Big Guy."
He looked at his watch. "Do you really have to go home? After all, I called into the gym and told them I couldn't come in today on account of this hand." "Yes--Celeste is going to drive me. I'd better go."
Hand in hand they walked back to the house.
