Capybara
The capybara is the largest rodent in the world, resembling a huge guinea pig. They are intelligent animals, and with proper handling from youngsters can become quite tame. They can also learn to walk on a leash and do a few simple tricks. Males not intended for breeding should be neutured before they reach a year old to curb undesirable behaviour.

Size: 120-140cm long and up to 50cm tall at shoulder

Housing
- housing in a large outdoor enclosure is best
- fences should be about 2 meters high
- they are very social animals and should be kept in pairs or groups
- they are semi-aquatic and should have access to a small pond or pool
- Accessories: large shelter, chew toys
Food
- main diet will consist of various grasses and hay
- supplement daily with a mixture of high quality cavy pellet and some rodent blocks
- offer fresh fruits and vegetables 3-4 times weekly
Breeding
- Maturity:15-18 months old
- Gestation: 149-152 days
- Litter size: 2-8
- in a mixed sex group only the dominant male will breed
- young are born fully furred and with eyes open
- should be fully weaned by 16 weeks old
