This page, as you can guess by the title, is about my goofy piggers! (aka guinea pigs)
In January of 2003, my Mother decided to get my sister, who was seven years old at the time, her first pet that would be her very own. She decided on a guinea pig. So she took her to the pet store, and let her pick out a baby guinea pig to take home, along with a My First Home cage by Superpet. Neither of us knew any better at the time. But I realize now, that those storebought cages are basically glorified litterboxes. It was so small that if you put one hidey house in there, a grown guinea pig could barely turn around in the cage, let alone run and get the exercise that guinea pigs need. Any way, so about a month after getting the first guinea pig, we realized he needed a friend. So we went back to the same store with my sister, and bought another young guinea pig and took him home. Not knowing anything about the need for a quarantine period, we introduced the new pig to our current pig that night. We were thankfully very fortunate, and neither piggy was ill and they got along fine from the beginning. Oh, and the names, Tutter and Bear, came from one of my sister's favorite shows at the time, Bear In The Big Blue House. Any way, to make a long story short, my sister, being as young as she was, and with guinea pigs being a lot higher maintenance than we realized, grew bored of them very quickly. And basically, I took over and have been caring for them ever since. I began to do lots and lots of research on the net about proper guinea pig care, and was horrified at the tiny cage they had been living in, and what I had been feeding them. Well, the piggers are now 5 years old, living in a 28"x70" C&C Cage, with lots of toys and hideys as well as room to run which they love, unlimited farmfresh bluegrass and 3rd cut timothy hay, and a great variety of fresh veggies every day. They are healthier and happier now, even at their "senior" age, than they were when they were young!
Guinea pigs are the goofiest creatures. I sometimes joke that guinea pigs are proof that God has a sense of humor.
