Well, maybe The Pope is French…

One of last year’s biggest movies was "A Knight’s Tale" inspired by The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. The movie follows the story of William Thatcher, a peasant who disguises himself as a noble to joust in the tournaments. When they arrive in France for a big tournament three Frenchmen are offering to make a bet that William, known as Sir Auric, can’t best all the French knights in jousting. They sling insults back and forth about each other’s country until one Frenchman stands up and says, "The Pope himself is French." To which William’s squire responds, "Well maybe The Pope is French, but Jesus is English!"
If you think about it, it makes sense. The French and the English people were always at odds with each other, almost different as day and night. The Pope and Jesus are also as different. Most people you can’t convince them of that notion. Most of the population of America considers The Pope to be the closest person to God here on Earth. Why? Domination over the church, the real church. In 96 A.D. a new Roman ruler named Domitian (the origin of the word???) went so far as to demand his subjects to call him Lord God Caesar. Most agreed for fear of execution. He even sent a committee to Asia Minor where the seven churches (as listed in chpts 2 and 3 of Revelation) dwell to erect temples in his honor and force people to worship him. Some of the brethren have submitted their will to him to keep from being executed. The churches were in an uproar and still there were those who refused to bow down to anyone here on Earth.
That’s one of the problems that Christians face, the persecution of going against The Pope and the Vatican. "And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray. 5. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray. 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25. Behold, I have told you beforehand." (Matthew 24:4-5, 24-25) Don’t put your faith in any man here on earth, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)
Want further proof? The title of Pope doesn’t appear anywhere in the bible. The name Jesus appears 983 times in the New Testament not to mention some 300 prophecies in the Old Testament which start right in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3:14-15 "And Jehovah God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, cursed art thou above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: he shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
There has to be more to preachers of the gospel then a title. All too often we see titles like Pastor or Reverend or even Father before a person’s name. What did Jesus say about titles? Here it is from Matthew 23: 5-12, "5. But all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders `of their garments', 6. and love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7. and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi. 8. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren. 9. And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, `even' he who is in heaven. 10. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, `even' the Christ. 11. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted." Jesus came to earth not only to teach but also to serve. Do you think anyone could just walk up to The Pope and ask for five minutes of his time? Let’s think on a smaller scale, do you think the average voter could call up Senator John McCain’s office and schedule a lunch appointment with him just to talk? No way! But Jesus had people come up to him all the time wanting healing, instruction, and even to invite him to dine at their house. Did he refuse? No! He was there for everyone: Jews, gentiles, scholars, fishermen, scribes, etc.
So, is The Pope really French? No, he's Polish. Neither is Jesus English. He is the Savior of all men, especially those who believe (1 Tim. 4:10). Put your trust and faith in someone, who can save you, who will be there for you and who cares about everyone and not just those of high standing or social grace. "Hear ye Him!" (Matt. 17:5)
