Short Stories

The Shoes That Were Danced to Pieces, by the brothers Grimm: one regret I always have is that the twelve princesses have absolutely no personality. The end is somehow disappointing, the soldier really doesn't care a bit. Robin McKinley did better on that point.
The Twelve Dancing Princesses, by Robin McKinley (in The Door in the Hedge): very interesting version, where we have an explanation of why the princesses go underground to dance every night. My version For Jania was inspired by this one.
The Twelve Dancing Princesses, by Patricia A. McKillip (in the anthology A Wolf at the Door): at last a version where the princesses have names! One strange thing though, the soldier is depicted to be young... First time ever. Anyway, interesting version, mixing elements from the Grimms' tale and the one from the Red Fairy Book, with a twist in it!

Pictures Books

The Twelve Dancing Princesses, by Marianna Mayer and illustrated by Kinuko Y. Craft: very nice version of the tale. The illustrations are beautiful and the retelling is very sweet.
