Name: Hannah Appearance: has light-colored hair with plants growing in it Gift/Talent: somewhat of a hedgewitch in the beginning, learns more throughout the story Story: Treasure At The Heart Of Tanglewood Myth: a variation of the Persephone story.
Name: Caribou Appearance: average height, dark hair Gift/Talent: is considered a wisewoman by her tribe Story: The Woman Who Loved Reindeer Myth: there seems to be a lot of mythical ideas in here, but I don't think there is any particular myth this story resembles.
A girl in the forest. Neither she nor her animal companions know how they got there or if they ever had lives somewhere else.
Tanglewood forest is home of a girl with plants that grow in her hair, who people come to for aid and remedies. But it is also the home of a strange wizard who seems to have the forest under his control. What will happen when she discovers his deception and decides to see what lies outside the forest?
The wizard tells her she will die. She believes leaving the forest can help her and her companions find out who they are and where they came from.
This book is wonderful, of course. Includes foxes. *loves*
A young girl named Caribou takes care of a parentless baby, until one day he tells her of his calling to run with the deer. He leaves her as a teenager, changing into deer from at the edge of the forest.
She misses him terribly but continues to fullfill her duties as her tribe's wisewoman. Somewhere in the midst of a realization that their entire land is going to be destroyed, Reindeer comes back.
Caribou must then try to convince her people that they need to leave their home, and she and Reindeer lead the people down the long path to a land of safety where the deer have gone.
