Is Burori the Legendary Super Saiya-jin?
One of the DBZ mailing lists I'm on started to tackle this question right after Cartoon Network re-aired the episode where Son Goku arrives on Planet Namek with such power that Vegeta wonders if Son Goku (a lowly sodier) has managed to become the next Legendary Super Saiya-jin. The idea that Son Goku might be the Legendary Super Saiya-jin conflicts with Movie #8 in which Vegeta claims that Burori is the Legendary Super Saiya-jin.
According to the FUNimation dub, the last Legendary Super Saiya-jin lived over 3,000 years ago. He was so powerful that he ended up destroying himself because could not control his abilities. (The planet he was on at the time blew up. Perhaps this planet was Old Planet Vegeta? Maybe that was why the saiya-jins had to find a new world? Hmm. Something to consider.)
Anyway, in the DBZ mailing list discussion, quite a few responses were based on the implied definition of "legendary." There was one suggestion that said that Son Goku was the Legendary Super Saiya-jin because he had to work to achieve his power whereas the power came naturally and easily (too easily?) to Burori.
When we use the word "legendary," all we are really saying is "something previously mentioned in legends." However, that is not always what we mean to say. If something is legendary, it is usually very impressive, rare, and elicits awe. There can be legendary heros, villans, beasts, floods, famines, etc. We use "legendary" to apply to all of these awesome beings and disasters.
I am unsure how the idea of working to gain one's power automatically puts Son Goku in the running for Legendary Super Saiya-jin. It seems to me (and I may be wrong) that Burori actually has more of the characteristics described by Vegeta that were possessed by the last L.S.S. than Son Goku (i.e., extreme power and the inability to control it until, ulitmately, he was destroyed by it). But, if Burori is not the L.S.S., he is at the very least a natural super saiya-jin.
The fact that Son Goku could control his power and use it for good was also argued to be a characteristic of something that is legendary. I am not sure of what to do with this, either. Although, supposedly, the last Legendary Super Saiya-jin destroyed himself deliberately because he knew that he could not control his power.
So who is the Legendary Super Saiya-jin? I can't say (that's why this is in the Burori Debate section). Of course, there are two ways to solve this dillema: 1. The movies are the alternate DBZ universe. In the movies, Burori is the L.S.S. and in the episodes, Son Goku is the L.S.S. or 2. There is no rule stating that there can't be 2 Legendary Super Saiya-jins at the same time. Therefore, it's possible that both Burori and Son Goku are L.S.S.
