Preface - Yes, here's where I get to rant off my reasons for having this couple, why I like them when they don't end up together (basically no hope of them getting together offically at all), why the color scheme, ect, ect, ect. Mind you though, this is all just perosnal opinions, my own observations and interpretations and riddled with my own prejudices (some characters I just don't really like, OK? ) I won't provide evidence lists or anything since those, too, are really just personal perspectives on different observations of interactions between the couple. These are my reasons for having this shrine and my views on the couple. Please respect them. You can flame me if you want, but all flames will only be laughed at and promptly deleted. If you flame me, it means you also waive all rights to its privacy and is taken that you give me permission to post the flame and do what I will with it.
Why Satoshi Miwa and Meiko Akizuki?
I was first struck with this couple when Namura (as everyone calls him) broke the relationship off and left for Hiroshima to work with his father. He never told Meiko of this. She found out by heresay. As he left the school after his offical resignation announcement, he ran into Satoshi. They just stared at each other a few moments before Satoshi smiled and said he would take care of Meiko. A sad expression came over Namura's face and he just left.
He never let Meiko decide for herself what she wanted to do and when she tried to leave with him for Hiroshima, he pushed her off. He seems to think what he decides is best for Meiko and never lets her make her own decisions on this matter. He forced his own decision on her and abandoned her when she really needed him. After he left, he never contacted Meiko again, letting up the farce that he wanted no connection to the relationship he had with her. He still kept contact with Ryouko though and kept updated on Meiko through her. When he actually did return to Tokyo, he avidly avoided Meiko. Meiko accidently ran into him when he was walking with Ryouko, though. He steeled up and said matter-of-factly that it was over between him and Meiko and that he was dating Ryouko now. This struck me as cold and unforgiving. To me, he wanted to kill anything he ever had with Meiko. When he actually did get togehter with her again after she came all the way to Hiroshima to confront him when he sent a telegram congratulating her on a winning of a writing contest, it seemed to surreal to me. I'm so sure on his total devotion to her being renewed again. He seems a bit to artifical to me. He's wishy-washy and never quite sure of what to do. He trys to choose for Meiko on things when it should be let up to her. He's not a very stable person emotionally and can go too cold to her when she needed him to be there for her. He's doesn't seem like the dependable type to me. It didn't even seem a sercurable decision to sit with him even after he decided to return to her.
Satoshi being closer to her age can help the relationship between them. As he told Namura that he would take care of Meiko when Namura was gone, he did just that. He diligently persued Meiko despite her constant rebukes expoiting each rare avenue she provides toward her, but he never tries to suffocate her. He gives her the room she wanted and never tried to force himself onto her. He always pestered her for a simple date to try a chance with, never anything more demanding. He was persistent enough, though, that it started to soften her up to him. He was finally able to get a date with her though only by a bit of cunning. He used the cover of a friendly get together outing to the movies with Miki and Yuu with them (he with Yuu and Meiko coming with Miki). Once the group had gathered, he meanuvered himself and Meiko away from Miki and Yuu (partially to get her alone and work on Yuu's and Miki's budding relationship). She wasn't too pleased with this and wasn't too sure, but he openly gave her. the option to leave. She chose to stay. She didn't force him away. It happened another time when he rigged a game to be partnered up with her where they had to go out after dark and, as a team, find something and return to base. She figured the game was rigged when they ended up together, but she didn't mind it. She eventually warmed up to him as the incident with Namura started to fade. He took her out on serveral other dates and outings and she enjoyed it more and more. A main key to his understanding is that Satoshi didn't try to replace Namura. He didn't try to make Meiko forget about Namura and he respected that she never would totally forget. He was happy to just be in her heart and have her as she is now. That doesn't mean he wouldn't fight for her, though. He got into a fight with Namura when he went to Hiroshima with Meiko, accusing him of messing with her feelings and basically being a cold bastard (pardon). He eventually backed off when Meiko went back to Namura in the series.
There was a romance budding between Meiko and Satoshi, but it was cut prematurely in the series when the confrontation in Hiroshima occured. If Namura had stuck with his original plans of aloofness, the two might have eventually ended up together. Satoshi was there when Meiko needed an emotional support and a stable shoulder. He never pushed her away and he never tried to suffocate her. He backed off when she need her space and came in when she needed that shoulder. He let her make her own decisions about things, and he accepted her decisions. He did everything at the pace that agreed with her and gently weedled away into her heart without trying to weedle Namura out. He accepted her as her and never tried to infringe on her. Namura departed making the decision for her that it was best to break the relationship off. He left her alone, unsure, and unsupported. Satoshi stepped in to support Meiko and love her as Namura left her. He always loved her. He will continue to love her despite anything she decides and will always be there when she needs someone to lean on.
Why the color purple?
Traditionally, the color purple represents a meeting and blending of the mind and spirit. It also represents intuition. In western cultures, it was the color of royalty for a long time.
First, both Meiko and Satoshi come from wealthy families, and, thus it being the color of wealth through royalty, I felt it appropriate. They're like royalty - popular, and respected each in their own right. They're a central factor of influence each in the group. Meiko is the closest person to Miki and is her voice of reason in her dilemmas. Satoshi is the person Yuu turns to when he is going though a problem. They're ruling figures in the groups that develop thoroughout the span of the show.
A meeting and blending of the mind and spirit -- Satoshi and Meiko really joined when she was broken away from Namura and she was hurt tremendously and seriously unsure without anyone to really help her through. Through his persistence and open support, she came to understand Satoshi better and came to care for him more, slowly but surely toward more than justa friend. He supported her wholeheartedly and she came to depend emotionally upon him nearly just as much as she did Namura. They became connected by a blossoming love in the hearts and by a mutual understanding in the minds.
