The millenium is the period immediately following the return of Christ. It is referred to as the Millenium because it is to last one thousand years.

According to the prophecies, the purpose of the Millenium is to be an example to the world of how God would have wanted it to be run. It says that he will rule with a "rod of iron", so this implies that people will still have a free will and some will try to rebel.

The curse (originally put on earth at Adam and Eve's fall) will be partially removed. Animals will have no fear of us and we will not be afraid of them. "A child shall play on the hole of an asp and shall not be harmed...the lion shall lie down with the lamb." An outstanding verse mentions, "Nothing shall hurt nor destroy..." In other words, no wars, nor killing of any kind.

It also appears that the people who survive the wars mentioned in Daniel 11, as well as the Wrath of God and the Battle of Armageddonwill be the ones who will be populating it.

Isa 2:4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Isa 11:9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

Isa 65:25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.

Micah 4:3 And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Rev 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
