The screech as the stairs gave way and crashed loudly far below ripped my heart; the look he gave me as he passed me by cut the torn pieces from my body.

"Let's do this one at a time, shall we?"

Not to me, to the Kirbys, as if I wasn't even there.

I couldn't watch him. I couldn't watch his back as he walked away from me, again. I felt him, though. The walkway shivered at each step and the vibrations gently resounded under my feet. By the time I was able to look up, he had disappeared into the fog and the vibrations had stopped. He was too far away for them to travel back to us...to me. We all stood, frozen, breath held until...

"Okay. Come on over. One at a time."

My heart resurrected itself in a burst of hard thumps as it fought to reach Alan, but it was Amanda who got to go next. Did he trust me to bring up the end, to watch their backs and make sure they got across safely? Or did he just not care whether or not I made it at all?

-end-
